Here it comes Will Du ohhhhhhh!

Isaak Phillips D
Phillips doesn't play a flashy game or marvel with big, spectacular highlight reel plays, but he does a good job of effectively moving the puck up ice and facilitating the play for others. In the defensive zone, he uses his smooth skating to work his way around the zone. He does a good job of angling attackers to the outside and forcing them to drive wide and out of higher danger areas. He has an active stick, consistently disrupting passes and shots with deflections. He can engage physically but he doesn't go out of his way to seek hits. He uses his big frame along the boards to pin opposing players and move the puck to a safe area. His best tool is his ability to stay calm and collected defensively when pressured. He understands the game and does a good job of identifying what he needs to do and reacting. He also does a good job of getting the puck up the ice and out of the defensive zone, pushing the puck up the ice with a pass or with his feet. While he isn't the type of player to make long stretch passes, he opts for safe outlets from one zone to the next. He makes the safe, smart pass which will make coaches love him and feel comfortable depending on him. He has a good shot from the offensive blue line, is careful in his selection on directing pucks to the net. He does a good job of moving down into the faceoff circles to ensure that it's a lot more effective, too. He acts as a facilitator in the offensive zone rather than a playmaker.

So not one forward or defense man over 6 1 and 190 in this draft. Wow let's not address size and physicality at all. Hmm

They drafted plenty of size last year, Dach, Vlasic, Tepley, Moberg, and traded for Regula.

Except that presumably, they would replace him by spending the cap hit savings, not with a minimum-salary player - unless they are going to become a budget team.
- StLBravesFan

Why wouldn't they replace Smith with an ELC guy? Face it. Unless they commit to their youth, they will be mediocre for years.

Whatever happens, we assume they will be spending (in total) to the $81MM cap with active players - what they pay to buy out a player would be on top of that - so additional cash out.
- StLBravesFan

They cash layout so far is actually less than the cap. Nothing wrong with being a budget team during a rebuild. The worse they can do is spend to the cap and suck.

The (frank) is Buffalo doing? Look, Kahun isn't must have or anything but the guy is a useful middle 6 forward.

Jankowski would be worth taking a look at for the right price.

I’m assuming they will be a cap team, not a budget team, spending to the $81MM - however it falls out - Smith’s replacement, money for Kubalik and Strome, Crawford or replacement - I’m assuming they will spend to the cap plus pay out Smith. Thus costing them cash.

You’re right - if they don’t spend to the cap, they would spend less.

They still have to resign Crawford (or someone, maybe at the minimum), Kubalik, Strome - I’m assuming all of that (without bringing on any UFAs) will eat up Smith’s cap savings and they will be back to the cap.

If not - better for the Wirtz family financial statements.

Have no clue, especially since they only have 12 players signed. Of course 3 of those signed are horrible (Skinner.Okposo, Ristalaunin)

With our somewhat regulars Kahun, Vinnie, Dano (didn't get much of a chance) and Hayden on the unqualified list, I guess it shows why we've had such weak teams over the years.

Unless I'm mistaken (going off of NHL.com's stats)

4th round, CHI - Michael Krutil - D - CZE - 6'3" 202 lbs.

Not that it matters. Ejdsell was big and he sucked. Same with Mashinter, John Q, John Scott, Bollig, Svedberg, McNeil, etc.

Draft hockey players. If they happen to have size, that's a bonus.

They are trying to keep Eichel happy, so they will likely be going for some bigger names.

Their AHL Forward youth isn't taking them anywhere.

But there are several options that are better than Smith.
