Sounds like a Boogie Nights name. Dirk Diggler. Brock Landers. Chet Rockwell. Chase Bradley.

Or the rich kid bad guy in an 80s comedy. “Chase wants to build a golf course and wreck our trailer park!”

Dominik Kahun also Non Tendered.... He'd be an interesting flier in a short term deal.

There’s a new hiccup in arbitration that I wasn’t aware of. The team has to sign the player if the number comes in under a certain $. For Athanasiou, it was a 3 million qualifier but 4.5 mil and the team had to accept and sign. Anything above and they can walk. I don’t know if that’s new (it’s the first I’ve heard of it). Bowey may have been in the range of 2 mil at the “have to sign” number

Ahh, yes. Forgot about that. Thanks. Makes much more sense now.

I think it's actually $4.5m for everyone and is adjusted each year based on the average NHL salary.

Detroit’s listed as “draft losers” on Sportsnet. A bit is said about the drop Detroit has suffered in the lottery (as well as the jump NYR has gotten) and missing out on top players. Still, not a lot of warm and fuzzies about this draft class

I do agree that Detroit should be getting higher first round picks. There’s still a lack of enthusiasm for this draft so far. Hoping that changes

I'm so used to Detroit getting screwed in the draft lottery that I expect it now. There's nothing we can do about it.

I've been following this site for a while now but this is my first time posting.... It has been a lot of fun following along with all of these opinions and commentary as the Wings try to navigate themselves out of this deep abyss.
As for this year's draft class for Stevie Y, I believe we have to continue to have faith in his selections based on his prior track record. The media hypes up many prospects and makes draft class judgements based on some of these "sexy" picks but the true evaluations cannot be made until years down the road. These players are still just kids and so much is going to happen for them as they move forward along their development paths. As we have seen in the past with many prospects, the ones that might be NHL ready at this point don't always continue their upward trajectory or end up with the highest ceilings. That being said, I think we also have to have faith in the culture and development model Yzerman is building at this time. There is a reason that some organizations appear to ruin elite prospect after elite prospect while other organizations seem to continually strike gold in the later rounds. This whole process will take time but I think we have to sit back, take a deep breath and enjoy the journey.

It's an educated guessing game. Every fanbase always believe they stole the draft. Like their team is so much smarter than everyone else. It's wishful thinking. Now many of these players will go on to be stars, good players, role players. But most of them will never see the NHL.

We can't really judge a team's draft until 4-5 years down the road. But it's always ridiculous to me how the media and fans can claim to have won a draft right after it's concluded. I go by facts, history and proven track record. Steve Yzerman has proven he's excellent at making draft picks. His old team just won the Stanley Cup. He built it. So this just in. Maybe he knows what he's doing? Just a thought.

So while fans and media keep flapping their gums chaiming their teams hit home runs and the Red Wings failed, I'll tell them to go (frank) themselves. 👍 They're talking straight from their asses pretending to be draft experts when all they're really doing is parroting what they've seen on TV or read on the internet.

Even the experts who do this for a living don't really know how good or bad these players will be. They're 18 year old kids. It's very inexact. Very unpredictable. I have faith in Steve Yzerman. I'll take his word over some guy writing an article in his mom's basement. Ok rant over! By the way, welcome to the board! 👍

Welcome aboard.

I would say that overall I have a lot of faith in Yzerman. From what I can tell his approach to team building (and team rebuilding) is solid, and overall I think he makes a lot more good decisions than bad decisions.

Does that mean I agree with every decision he makes? No, certainly not. And whether I agree or disagree with a specific decision, I’ll probably say so here and discuss it with others and say what I might have done differently. That’s fun for me. I do, of course, realize that I’m just a guy trying to avoid working his day job and Yzerman is a Hall of Famer who built the team that just won the Stanley Cup, so I try not to get too cocky about my projections.

I think you can be critical about a specific draft pick or disagree with a trade here or there, yet do so with the understanding that it’s always an inexact science, and without losing confidence that, overall, Yzerman is a trustworthy GM who is taking the team in the right direction.

He’s aggressive and not afraid to make bold moves that he thinks are best for the team, yet still rational and objective about his own limitations. When you take that approach, you don’t necessarily need to make the right call 100% of the time in order to improve the team quickly. No GM is perfect and they all make bad decisions from time to time, but if you’re smart and aggressive you can make a ton of progress in a fairly short period of time even if you’re only right, say, 70 or 80 percent of the time.

Alexander Wennberg being bought out. I wouldn't mind giving him and Duclair a try on short term deals.

Hirose I'm cool with. He's there to provide top-six offense for GR (if there's even an AHL season, that is) while standing by for short-term call-ups. Every org needs guys like that in their system. Especially in a year like this where a lot of top prospects that would normally fill out GR's roster will be overseas.

Erne, I agree with you. Very meh.

I knew he'd keep Erne. That's his boy from Tampa. Former second round pick. At least he didn't keep Houdini Perlini. I don't know about the Purple Hirose of Cairo. I guess it's poop or get off the pot time for him.
