Nashville buying out Kyle Turris. I'd target him in free agency. He is a good 3rd line option and he can move up to a temp top 6 role if crosby/malkin are hurt. - SuperHenderson13
Yep
Offer him 2.5 Million x 2 years and call it a day
He won't be a league minimum guy, but he can still play |

I like everything JR has done this offseason. Even if you hate Matheson, that was the cost of moving off of Horny. Look around NO ONE is taking on the $$ and term of a guy like Horny
Out
Hornqvist
Bjugstad
JJ
Murray
Simon
Sheary
Schultz
Bunch of Old/Slow and/or dead weight - TheGame316
Just do these lines:
Guentzel-Crosby-Kapanen
Rust-Malkin-Crosby
Crosby-Crosby-Crosby
Crosby-Malkin-Crosby
Letang-Crosby
Crosby-Marino
Letang-DeSmith
Jarry

I refuse to believe Horny couldnt have been dealt without taking back Matheson

Question is, does Ottawa think MM will be their goalie in a few years when they start being ready to contend, or do they think they can help him tank for Wright |

He could have been dealt elsewhere with an equally bad contract/limited player coming back
GM's can't move anybody anywhere.
Older players like Horn with limited skillsets/deployments making 5.3 Million for 3 more years are toxic assets

I don't want only 1 year. If he plays good all of a sudden he's going to want more money
I'd like to get some security on the position. And he's a center, so teams will likely offer him more than 1 Million just to fill out their roster

No room for Tanev, need to get Crosby out there as much as possible. |

The years don't matter. We actually have a position in the lineup for Matheson. We didn't have one for Horny. Not in the top 6 and not on the type of 3rd line that GMJR/Sully are wanting to build

OTOH, if he signs a multi-year deal without a NMC, he'll be subject to the expansion draft. If he signs a one-year deal, he will be a UFA when the ED takes place. |

No thanks. Turris is replacement level now and was terrible when not being carried by Craig Smith |

Ok, thanks.
So there should be roster room for JR to blow cap space on a sh!tty RD, right? - MattStrat
Yes there is. The guy I'd target is Koekkoek. Puck moving bottom pairing type that plays either side. Made near league minimum and didn't play a ton, but formed a strong pairing with Maatta at the end of year and playoffs. He'd be a good guy to battle with Ruhwedel and improve depth that wouldn't cost much. |

True
We give him a nice deal and he balls out, it would be a no brainer for Seattle to take him. No harm no foul I guess though, it would prevent Seattle from taking a different player off of us |

If Matheson is barely 3rd pairing and can't become 2nd pair worthy... its a beyond stupid move. You can find 3rd pairing Dman for 2 mil or less |

Was he not part of that trade? Why take him then? - Brownsoldier
Toronto was hoping to get ERod to sign for less than his QO. Obviously didn't, but they never paid him a cent so no harm having him included. |

But looking at it from his POV, sign a 1-year deal at like $2M, then next offseason, got for the multi-year deal if you're betting on yourself. |

Did the same with JJ lol. He's not an albatross, but I'd rather have the cap space personally. - 668710
Yeah Sceviour isn't JJ bad or much of a problem. But with all these players coming available for cheap, I'd rather spend the roster spot on someone who might play on the 3rd instead. Lafferty can ably fill that role. |

Just as bad as having Horny anchor the 3rd line or or slowing down the 4th line
Matheson has upside still. We exhausted all we could out of Horn. He became a square peg in a round hole
We can also find 3rd line wingers with limited skill sets for 2 million or less |
