So they would retain half and send us a 1st? Highly unlikely.

A buyout would be $2.5M, $3M, $2M, $2M

What you are saying is $3.5M, $3.5M plus a first.

Pretty sure they would just take option #1, especially if they can use the extra $1M this year to compete. I'm just not buying this Fleury with half retained plus a 1st (or more) talk. Lots more buyouts coming today.

They are going to be in this same situation up against the cap for several years. I think they were also trying to find a way to sign Pietro. That first wouldn't burn as much if they knew they were getting a 1 RD.

All of this hand-wringing about lack of FAs - we should have known there would have been a lot of QOs not given (and buyouts, with more on the way). Now who is JR targeting? Because you just know he is obsessing over someone right now.

yes, you should have. 😁

Sounds Like Taylor Hall is OK with taking a little less $ for a chance to win. Not sure if Pittsburgh would fall in that category or not at this point, but worth exploring...

Thoughts on moving Pettersson and signing Hall for like 5M? Would still have 3-4M to sign another depth D-man and a possible 3/4C.

To me, Hall would be worth the gamble of moving forward with the D corps without Pettersson.

Come on, there's way more than you expected, no? Some surprising names, too, when it comes to no QOs.

I think Hall taking "less" would be something like $7 mil a year.

That's what I was thinking, too. As opposed to $8-$9M. I don't think I would want to give him his next big, long contract. Something tells me it's not going to turn out well.

As for the Pens, it would be a lot better if he were a RW.

Nope, this is exactly what I've been saying. I couldn't guess all the names, but I knew the flat cap was going to put some names out there people weren't expecting that would be worth taking a look at. This is what I've been saying about it being a great year to bargain shot.

Only 2 names really fall outside of what I expected. Kahun because his QO was cheap and they kept saying how much they liked him. And Duclair because you'd have thought they could get a return for someone like him. Never even heard a rumor.

The rest, yes I expected that kind of quality out there. And it's going to depress the market and force some guys to sign real cheap.

If they buyout Fleury that's $4.4M cap savings right there. Sounds like Stastny and his $6.5M might be on the move, too. They'll figure something out like all teams always do. I feel hopeful that JR is not interested in Fleury.
- Hockey66

I wonder if there could be some creativity in a deal based around McCann for Stastny with some retention? So let's say it adds $1.5-2M to the Pens cap but it's only one year and you get a clear cut, really good 3C.

He's definitely getting older but still playing pretty well. I am not sure I would do it, as I like McCann more than most here do.... and there are enough intriguing free options hitting the market...just thinking out loud...

(Re)sign Kahun as he formed a very good line with Geno and roll with this:

Guentz-Sid-Kap
Kahun-Geno-Rust
Zucker-McCann-Tanev
Poulin-Blueger-Sceviour

All moot....they wont re-sign Kahun.

Im not a huge fan of the Pens right side (forward). One more middle 6 guy and I think they're looking good.

The most success McCann had last season was when the third line was Kahun-McCann-Hornqvist for the first quarter of the season. It is probably moot, but Rutherford has reacquired guys he's seemingly thrown away before so who knows. If we got Kahun back and another of the unqualified RFA guys on the cheap with Poulin fighting for a spot, I'd like our roster going into the season.

Really, really hoping Rutherford doesn't blow his wad on a bottom pairing RD with this cap space we now have. Its very obvious that we need forwards and we have an overload of bottom pairing defensemen between Matheson, Ruhwedel, Riikola, and POJ looking like he can handle call up duty.

Yeah, I was thinking after I posted that he was part of a good 3rd line with McCann too. Even more reason to sign him. It would keep Guentz and Zucker in top 6, while he complements the 3rd line/McCann well and could go up to top 6 when/if injuries occur.

Its well documented by now that the 3rd pair RD "opening" is my only real fear for the Pens this offseason hahaha

Some of these guys we already know are accounted for but then there's all the non qualified RFA's not listed here as well....so there's a lot of names hitting the market tomorrow at 1:30 pm (Newf time). Should be an entertaining day and its a Friday...I'm already gonna say peace out to productivity tomorrow.

Rutherford will definitely acquire a RD. (Tyson Barrie? to much money.?) He will probably sign Cody Ceci lol.

Dom just did a bit on unqualified RFAs. I'm super interested in what happens with Duke. He's a legit top 6 guy now and gave the Pens the middle finger because he wanted top 6 money that Ottowa wasn't giving him. He repped himself in negotiations so he didn't have an experienced agent whispering in his ear about whether or not this big bet on himself is a good idea in what's sure to be a down market due to COVID and self-imposed caps. I don't want to root against the guy since he's had a tough go of sticking with a team, but if his bet fails and he's forced to take a one year deal to test the market again next year, we could maybe get things to work.

If Duke could be fit under the cap I'm all about it. He can play both wings too I believe. Signing him would also help to deter the dreaded overspending RD signing.

EDIT: He gave the Pens the finger?
