Thanks Carol! Perhaps the reason they let Toffoli walk is they think Hoglander is ready now. Very possible |

All in all they got value in the draft, I’m no expert but none of those kids will probably ever play in the NHL, but you never know. I’m guessing the 2020 draft for our beloved Canucks will be much the same as 2016, a bust. |

At least they’re all tall. |

Thanks Carol.
I was a bit confused when you mentioned something about Markstrom and Flames and Oilers, then mentioned an offer-sheet.
I don't believe a UFA is eligible for an offer-sheet. |

They aren’t “letting him walk”, they can’t afford to pay what going rate will be. Just think how much cap space they will have when they sign a bunch of RFA (soon to be UFA) players and Holtby or Lundqvist.
Actually, come to think about it, they don’t even need to sign anyone but their own RFA’s to ice the team. Just a goalie, unless they go Lui D and Demmers. |

I think 2 will become at least tweeners if not regulars.
I really like the picks at 3rd and 7th round. |

Right. Sorry if that was unclear.
I just meant that, with all the offer-sheet ideas that get bandied around, it's rarely considered that the player needs to be willing to sign with the team that's making the offer. Edmonton, for instance, can't just go out and offer sheet a high-end RFA like Mikhail Sergachev and force him to join their team, even if the Lightning don't have the cap space to match.
It's up to the player. And where a UFA signs is up to the player as well.

That was a pretty good selection, I hear he lead his team in scoring and is a great leader.
Not sure how Calgarys 1st 2nd and 3rd round picks, from a couple years ago, Travis, Fricken and Hamonic have turned out, but I hear they may all be leaving via free-agency. |

True enough. I think he has potential!
I was also going to mention that with the 20th pick that originally belonged to the Canucks, the Devils took a Russian defenseman named Shakir Mukhamadullin, who's off to a good start with Ufa this year in the KHL.
Here's an interesting tidbit on that:
The Devils picked at 18 and 20, and the Rangers traded up to grab defenseman Braden Schneider at 19. I heard NJ may have been planning to pick Schneider and got thrown for a loop when he was snatched away from them. Without much time to think, in a draft that was short on blueliners, and after already taking two forwards, they just went to the next defenseman on their list.
It'll be interesting to see if Mukhamadullin pans out for the Devils...

Personally I think TT wants to play in So. Cal. He'll probably take a cut to do so. |

Thanks Carol! This another draft where i found myself pretty impressed with both Treliving and Gorton. Nyr got a few excellent prospects, obviiusly winning 1oa helps but Scnieder at 19 was a great pickup. I was schocked he was on the board after oilers/leafs/flames who continue to just not pIck d. I love that they don’t, but it’s a real headscratcher. Treliving clearly had a few guys he liked and managed to get two extra 3rds, the type of move you see all the time in other sports but gms in the NHL rarely seem to do. They had 2 picks i really liked in the 3rd too. All this said, JB seemed to have gotten good value on most of these picks, i like how this JJ Kid looks for sure. |

It’s his first shot at a big payday. Not surprised at all. Same with Marky. |

I've been reading this canucks blog since the days of Tessier so I know you don't take kindly to outsiders, but as someone with no vested interest, who just wants the best for every team, I don't think the Canucks should rush the rebuild because they won one play-in round and one playoff round. If not for Demko, they would have been out in 5 against VGK, who controlled most of the play.. the same way Tampa did to Dallas in the Final. There are levels to team building.
Yes Petey and QH will need new contracts after next season but you'll have the next crop of kids coming in on ELCs to offset it, and while the allure of acquiring a player like OEL is undeniable, the team isn't ready yet. Tyson Barrie isn't the answer either. You gotta take your medicine for those bad contracts and suck it up next year. There's always going to be good talent available on the FA market, and if you build it right, they will come. But next season is not the time.. unless all you want is a participation medal in the playoffs like it seems people in Edmonton are clamoring for.
