I've been reading this canucks blog since the days of Tessier so I know you don't take kindly to outsiders, but as someone with no vested interest, who just wants the best for every team, I don't think the Canucks should rush the rebuild because they won one play-in round and one playoff round. If not for Demko, they would have been out in 5 against VGK, who controlled most of the play.. the same way Tampa did to Dallas in the Final. There are levels to team building.
Yes Petey and QH will need new contracts after next season but you'll have the next crop of kids coming in on ELCs to offset it, and while the allure of acquiring a player like OEL is undeniable, the team isn't ready yet. Tyson Barrie isn't the answer either. You gotta take your medicine for those bad contracts and suck it up next year. There's always going to be good talent available on the FA market, and if you build it right, they will come. But next season is not the time.. unless all you want is a participation medal in the playoffs like it seems people in Edmonton are clamoring for. - Udogs

They don't like logic round these parts.......but FTW to your logic.
They aren’t “letting him walk”, they can’t afford to pay what going rate will be. Just think how much cap space they will have when they sign a bunch of RFA (soon to be UFA) players and Holtby or Lundqvist.
Actually, come to think about it, they don’t even need to sign anyone but their own RFA’s to ice the team. Just a goalie, unless they go Lui D and Demmers. - 1970vintage
You mean overpay?
JB gets chastised for paying "going rate" on UFAs, and then gets chastised for not paying "going rate" on UFAs.
I'm sure the Canucks put together what they think he is worth/can offer him in this market (ie. not overpay on $$ and term for an older player), and if TT says "I want more" then so be it.
Can't really judge this whole thing until we see what all these UFAs sign for and where.
I think it is time the Canucks move on from Markstrom, maybe take on MAF, provide some salary is retained and a pick and or player link Zack Whitecloud is involved.
MAF has 2 years remaining and can be the goalie exposed for expansion.
White loud is an RHD that can provide good depth as a 5/6 defenseman with some physicality and a bit of offense, a much better version of Stecher, IMO

He already overpaid the going rate on the guys who are now being discussed as trade/buy out/LTIR/Sent to the minors candidates. I don’t give two poops if they sign Toffoli or not, but if this was a guy he (you) really wanted being in a position where you can’t sign him because you can’t go beyond bargain basement...
Why should any player give Vancouver a discount when they have handed out fat deals to scrubs?

The whole MAF plus thing is rumored to have needed a third team. That third team would be retaining salary and receiving the pick/player. Vegas is not going to keep salary in that deal, and the Canucks are not going to get MAF at 50% AND a draft pick or prospect/player.
Im kinda hoping for Anthony duclair. He’s on 25. 40 points in 66 games on a very bad sens team. Could be a good for the Canucks and cheaper. Plays both sides too.

Vegas is 3 million over the cap and still needs to sign 3 players.
There's a reason why teams were asking so much to take on that contract. MAF will most likely be bought out.
MAF probably has more negative value than LE because the teams cap situation.

OEL or bust.
With the impending departure of so many of our UFAs, I figure he's the only (rumored) available player that could stand to keep the team from sliding backwards (but not necessarily improve...)
Hope you all have a fantastic thursday - Codes1087
Yeah, well that aint going to happen, my freezer packed it in. I'll be hauling $600 of rotted beef, lamb, pork, elk, moose, chicken, seafood, cheese, raspberries and blueberries to the dump not to mention pounds and pounds of salmon, smoked salmon, and 40 lbs of halibut

He paid the going rate for LE, Beags, Ferland, etc. because they had multiple teams interested in signing them to similar deals. Now, the question of should he have signed them or not is different. However, they signed for the going rate.
As for Toffoli, yes, his going rate is pricing him out of what the Canucks want to spend on him. They by all intentions CAN sign him. They have the money to – it just means not signing Marky and Tanev, but they have the money to sign him. However, if he wants more than what the Canucks think he's worth, and it/he doesn't factor into their long term plans, then signing him doesn't have as much to do with the cap as it does other factors.
That said, the Canucks still can sign him. It's not improbable.
As for discounts: as we've seen with OEL, people now want to play here. When signing the other scrubs in the past, they didn't as Vancouver wasn't desirable at the time, so they got full market value.

Sounds like a good time to switch to vegetarianism
