Capfriendly has the Canucks at $7.95M of cap space, after the signings so far today. Add another $1M for LE pushed to the AHL, and another $1M for Sven...call it $10M. AS I read it, that doesn’t include JV ($2.5-$3.5M) or Gaudette ($1M?), but it does include Ferland at $3.5M (possibly LTIR, but not until the start of the season). Unsure if it includes the bonuses, but assuming it does, they have still less than $6.5M for any other signings.

RHD is a much bigger hole than RW. I just don’t see how they have the cap to sign TT without making another move to dump salary, which will cost them picks or prospects.

I still think JB makes a trade in the next few days. Might be some flexibility with that.

Just saying lol, you guys get too riled up by “the other side” as if it has any influence.

I used to get caught up in it myself so I’m not innocent either

- Nucker101

Life has taught me that you'll get met with contrasting/opposing views in virtually anything.

Typically, debates --specifically online-- just lead to people only further entrenching themselves in their beliefs. It speaks to certain folks egos, and that tribalism compounds.

I read to get different or unique viewpoints. Naturally, there's things which don't resonate with me a lot of the time, but I can still respect it when there's honest attempts to back things up.

I'd dare say most on here are good at voicing the reasons, at least.

But getting riled up is pointless. This is supposed to be fun and occasionally enlightening. That's how I see it.

Just read Drance on the Athletic saying that they've heard that Canucks are also operating with a cash crunch and that was a significant reason for the structure of Holtby deal. 2.9 in yr 1 and 5m7 in yr 2.

Sounds like Benning is trying to save cash this year which might be part of why he is looking to resign "their own guys".

Aquilini handcuffing Benning bizarrely worked out for the best.

Benning - Virtanen is a player we have spent a lot of time with. We think he is going to be a consistent 20 goal scorer moving forward. Lots of growing pains along the way, but that's the case with a lot of players.

Better keep pencilling him into the line Nighty

Perhaps

He & his agent are saying he is “fit and ready to play”.

There is no LTIR unless he is examined & determined to be not fit to play...that isn’t going to happen in the off season unless both the team & he want it to.

- SlightlyOffside

Its possible for team move remember he left play as injured and has not been cleared to play. So it can be done.

I don't think he can be on LTIR in the off season but the team can be 10% over. They'll have to squeeze him onto the roster before putting him on LTIR before the season starts.
It shouldn't be hard since they should have some waiver exempt youngsters they can send down to maneuver the cap during/after training camp.

Yes he can be.

Benning: We're going to play some young kids. We think Olli Juoveli is ready to play. Chatfield is ready to play. Hoglander has had a good start overseas. They're going to keep getting better and their development will make us a better team. #Canucks

Sounds low on the priority list. Defense first
- Nucker101

From the beginning I thought JB's priority order on the 3 was Marky, Tanev then TT. Many had TT after Marky.

Benning: It's almost impossible to shed money. We've seen really good players go on waivers. The business of hockey will be different the next couple of years. We're in a good position. We have money where we can sign Petey, Hughes and Thatcher moving forward #Canucks

This is going to sound mental but I believe MacEwen has power forward complimentary top 6 upside. Moreso than JV.

I'm not nearly as down on Jake as some others on here. He's definitely been a project, but the progress has been there.

Unless he's looking for an outlandish contract (which I wouldn't see him getting anywhere right now), I think they're better off keeping him.

That it's too bad the Canucks don't have the cap space to sign him.

It's all about the shuffle champ. Losing Marky is the first step. Free it up JB!!

If JV played hungry & not like a spoiled brat he’d get paid & be a core player. He hasn’t & no indication he will. If he goes to arbitration he will be debased & embarrassed.

Those last couple tweets go a long way in confirming what Drance just said.

Looking forward to seeing Loui back in the top 6.

To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

in practical terms, no, this will not happen with ferland. he was not on LTIR when the season ended so getting him to 1) agree to a physical when not required for all players; and 2) have a doctor give a medical opinion on concussion issues with certainty that he can't play for at least 10 games at the beginning of next season (when they don't even know when it will start) is virtually nill.

anyway, this is a minor point and won't even be necessary. it's like grasping at MTA straws.

Arbitration is heavily stat and comparable based, the arbitrator won’t care about Jake’s conditioning or night life.
