I assume he's a good team guy and a hard worker in practice, those guys always get extra love. - Nucker101
In the playoffs Chatfield was the guy behind OJ as injury replacement D so that's why they have him high now plus being a RSD. They saw Rafferty was not ready D wise to handle NHL forwards. So in a flat cap world his low ELC is attractive even more then a vet signing at around $1M.
They are not getting Stecher back for that little. So whatever they spend on top 4D, they already have Benn's $2M for 6D, not much left over. Chatfield would be pushing Benn for 6RD or as 7th D. This all changes in season with Ferland and LE dealt with allowing for Tryamkin signing.
- He could have still moved guys out if he wanted to, I'm sure Ottawa would have gladly taken LE for a 1st.
- The expansion draft isn't stopping him from signing players, he just has to be more aware of NMCs. Just a wrinkle for every team right now.
- He didn't sell the farm for OEL, and stood by his limits on Marky, TT, and Tanev (for now)
I'm not saying he's turned into a great GM, and yes he's limited himself in certain aspects, but I think he's gotten to known/learn from those various restrictions and is making smarter choices within them. - NewYorkNuck
That’s fair. I agree that he had options to create space today at the expense of the future but chose not to, but I still feel that ownership has handcuffed him a bit due to financial uncertainty.
I also forgot to originally mention the looming EP/QH deals as another reason why he’s had to restrain himself.
Brodie played good with gio for a bit but the leafs are basically getting the jake gardiner of the western conference ... - Redmile247
I’ve seen Flames fans say he’s inconsistent year to year but played pretty well this year. I know Dubas has a hard on for zone exit/entry stats so that’s probably why he tried trading Kadri for him last year and now finally signed him as a UFA
I don’t think he’s nearly as bad as Gardiner is defensively

You say restrain, I see it as actually GMing for the future a bit more now
I was reading on the Athletic about ownership wanting to keep $$ down this year – they were positing that it's actually useful for the players too. Next next season, if fans come back, the escrow amount can come down off its 20%, and then if they're being paid more in that year they can actually make a bit more money.
But yes, Jim likes to spend. I'm sure if he could have, he would have signed more players.

Maybe not as bad as jake but Brodie’s best qualities were mainly offensive over defensive.

I could be wrong but I think it is at least as likely if not more likely that revenue is worse the following year when Holtby is owed 5.7. This year they played like 60-70% of games in front of fans. I would guess that number is less next year.

Really? I think the year after this there will be a vaccine and they'll have fans back in the stands. Full season and much more $$
