Muzzin was traded for a 1st, a prospect and another prospect.
Savard has at least equal value.

Savard is better than Dermott -- at least now and next 3-4 years.
Jenner is quite a bit better than Johnsson as well.

Leafs take on capspace and give a 1st and get back a 2nd.

I very much doubt Columbus would make such a deal -- really depends on how much they value the 3-3.5mln in additional capspace.. (not sure who they might be after in FA).

It would be a sweet deal for the Leafs for sure -- might need to swap the CLB 2nd for a 3rd / 4th to make it happen though.

- MaximusAurelius

1. Muzzin is much better, and that was a couple years ago in a differnt landscape.

2. You don't think that clb would do such a trade? They've already Done the exact same trade your talking about TWICE yesterday.

Clb gains cap space a 1st and the best dman in the trade, but you're unsure if they would do it

For the record -- Burn, you think Savard is yes/no guy that would be a good fit for this Leafs team? (seems from your comments you think Savard isn't very good, since you mention Dermott is better?)

(let's exclude the part about how much leafs would need to give up to get him)

- MaximusAurelius

He's not terrible and could help, but you must consider the acquisition cost (you've indicated trading a better younger cheaper (all that combines to a more valueable asset) for him.

Leafs use up all of their cap space in this deal and give up a 1st and isn't significantly if at all better.

Leafs are short of RHD, its well known - something has to happen before the season starts for sure. Even if its not a big name free agent. As of right now the RH side of eh defense is :

Holl
Liljegren
Duszak
Hollowell

Hard to say we even have one second pairing RHD at this point. We can say the prices are low, but until we see a move, that group is pretty disappointing.

- winsix

That is horrible... if we dont add At least 2 significant d-men, prepare for more playoff disappointment...

Columbus is making space, not so sure its for Pietrangelo, maybe Krug or Hall, maybe Nylander? You can hear the crickets on the Leafs trade front.

to say Dermott is better than Savard is... I don't know how to politely put it.. let's say, 'questionable'.

We have guys that have (and some prefer) to play the right side that are lhd. Dallas just went to the cup final with 4 of their 6 as lhd. I think this is overblown.

The fact you think that reinforces it correctly.

But lets not forget that he's also quite a bit younger and significantly cheaper.

Are they making space or are they shipping out $$$ because they are broke?

They didn't have $$$ last year to sign panarin and or bob the goalie, but this year after having no revenue, and looking at possibility of no revenue this coming year they suddenly have lots?

Probably shedding to cut cost

I agree, still think at least two d-men need to be added to this group, one has to be a signficant add. Doesn't have to happen today, but before the season starts and before the cupboards are bare.

Hamonic and Tanev. I'm not sure the dollars those two can command, but if its not too excessive then I don't think I'd be unhappy. I know Tanev is made of Lupul glass, so maybe not. I'm not sure.

Good point Columbus ' owner is not among the wealthiest owners. Team is probably heavily leaveraged.

Oh for sure, I hope so. I didn't mean to imply that they didn't need to change anything. Just that the lhd/rhd is overblown. If we don't get a righty we have guys that can move over there. But they do need to add for sure

I’m often disappointed in what I have purchased before I go shopping. Also Lehtonen has played on the right side for two years of pro in Sweden.

Even wealthy, cash rich owners may be shipping out $$$ this off season.

Just because you can afford a 30 million loss (or whatever it might end up being) doesn't mean you want to. But this is all speculation on my part. No idea what is going to happen.

Pretty sure the Leafs will not be in that group of teams looking to shed $$$. They will be looking to shed cap space, but they would be happy to do what McNall did (with other people's money) years ago to Pocklington.
