I think because they think he's an NHL goalie and to not have to worry about going through this next year at a higher price it was worth a small gamble he can be burried. - rpeters01
Its the first day of free agency, logic need not apply!!

Damn. Just saw Matt Murray's contract. Sens are betting a lotta coin on him returning to form.
Glad Bowman moved on - Elbows15
Yeah, well they would have sent Saad there and that would have freed some of it.
Thing about Matt Murray is with most teams he is going to be decent no sure with a rebuilding Senators or the HAWKS FOR THAT MATTER. |

I kinda like things quiet. I'm not one to get excited about ridiculous contracts.
Maybe not the money and/or term that players like. Maybe no trades are going through to help teams make space for the bigger fish out there. |

Also in previous years, the team would sign the free agent that they want, knowing they could get under the cap by game 1, look how Toronto did it last year. Well there are no such assurances that you can make those moves this year, so I think before the marquis free agents signed, the teams want to make sure they will be under the cap by making other moves before signing.

I see stan signing a depth d man and maybe one or two bottom 6 forward with speed and sandpaper to their game. Plus uncertainty of shaw and Seabrook might play into signing players. |

I was thinking at least something to go down but like you said Bread it's probably best things are quiet. Stan and company are in no position to go big game hunting as they should be not with the team being retooled and especially with the current NHL economic state. Stay safe bud! |

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend to all of our Canadian friends!
Thanks for all your compliments and great thoughts shared today.
It's still early in seeing how the roster will shake out but we're at least seeing lines drawn in the sand that provide parameters moving forward.
As some of you have stated, management just has to stick with that plan.
I like how Mr. Ricochet put it (paraphrasing): "If you can't pick a lane, then you don't have an organizational plan."
The youth and innovation mantra is making a firm stance on what the plan is now and I'm on board with that as a fan. |

THEO: I agree with you about the Hawks laying low at the beginning. They have players coming off injury that I do believe you cannot just cut an injured player loose. Plus who will trade for a Shaw or Smith, higher cap hit, both coming off injury ? Nobody most likely. We have to see what Delia and Lankinen have, after all Delia is 25 and Lankinen is 24. Right around the same age Crawford was when he became the starter - chuckdahammer
Crawford was 26 when he took over Turco as starter in 2010-11. Subban and Delia are actually 26, too. Lankinen is 25.
Subban and Delia had/have better AHL numbers than Crawford did while Lankinen's numbers aren't far off Crawford's.
The main difference, though, is that Crawford was the starter for 5 full seasons in the AHL. Subban, Delia, and Lankinen played just parts of 4, 3, and 2 seasons respectively.
Regardless, now is a good time as any other to see what the system has then go from there. At least see if there is a solid backup. Bonus if one emerges as reliable starter. |

Thanks for this "history" lesson. Maybe if the marketing dept needs a slogan, it could be "The Future Starts Now"

Or maybe instead of "1 goal" it could be "6 goals (against)". |
