There is a step up from the AHL to the NHL. NHL level experience is required for young players to become good NHL players. It must be done judiciously on each individual basis and the team situation isn't always conducive to "let the kids play" - but in the current Hawks situation it is my believe that it's the best thing to do - even with the almost certainty that the Hawks will suck for a year or two. - EbonyRaptor
They worked in several last year in Dach, Boqvist, Highmore, Nylander and Kubes was technically a rookie.
A few others saw time, Gilbert, Carlson, and Beaudin and Hagel each got a game.
I’d rather see them continue to add youth to the lineup and the time for adding bandaids in the form of cheap vets is over.
Play the kids. I like the idea of keeping Murphy and Saad around but there's no need for more vet presence right now with 2, 7, 19 and 88 still on the team. |

From J. Zucker to TJ Compher, the USA program has been great at developing all around players who never forgot what the best play is. The USA kid all have high hockey IQ sound decision making instincts and good all-around toolbox and skill.

Wanna point something out to you about the NTDP U-18's this yr as you watch their games and evaluate, Wiz. They have a new coach this coming yr, Dan Muse.
He was the coach when the Steel won the cup in 16/17. Next yr he was on the Predators bench as an assistant and was fired when the Preds changed the whole coaching staff going into this yr. Helluva leap, from the USHL straight to the NHL. Even Cooper had to stop in the AHL before getting the TB gig ...........
Here's the point. I watched every Steel game that yr, many live, and what was different from other USHL cup teams than with Muse's team was the structure. As you know it's almost beyond rare for a jrs team to have complete buy in to iron clad structure shift after shift, game after game, month after month.
The Steel looked like the Hawks under Q in the cup yrs where it seemed they had 6 skaters on the ice where there were no options for the opponent and always an open guy when they had the puck cuz the structure was strangling and constant. That's how a Muse team looks and plays.
Now you have a team that has the best 25 kids in a country of 330 million coached by a guy who pounds structure into his teams. Of course the NTDP always has elite coaching but this coaches calling card is structure and communication. Elite talent with structure. Can't wait to see this version of the U-18's.
Just a heads up when you watch the U-18's this yr. Gonna be real interesting for this fan.

Couple points;
1. Stasny isn't a 2C and longer
2. WTH would anyone let Vegas off the hook for that. Chevy has lost his mind. - vabeachbear
How does this deal happen without some retention on the part of Vegas? In this climate GM's have to be smarter than that. |

I know they are getting paid a boatload of money, but I wonder what is going through the minds on 19 and 88. I wonder if they want to stick around for a rebuild. Time will tell, but do think the Toews contract would be very hard to move, but I do think somebody would definitely want Kane. Just speculation and wondering how the poster boys are feeling right now. |

Even though CHI did not qualify goaltender Malcolm Subban, expect the Hawks to sign him today to a two-year deal with an AAV just south of $900K. CHI expects Subban, Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen to compete for the starter and back-up job in 20-21.
Honestly, I don't have an issue with this unless they are going full scale rebuild. I said two years ago that they should trade Kane, Toews and Keith. Rebuilding on the fly equals mediocrity at best. Of course, I get that marketing is a big part of the Hawks DNA so trading Kane, Toews and Keith is unlikely. Otherwise, there is zero plan moving forward. |

Subban has mediocre numbers I believe so correct me if I'm wrong. That said, he's never been given the reigns to be a number 1 playing behind Rask, Fleury and Crow and if we sign him, I'd like to see what he can do. |

I could see keith possibly being traded at the tdl if hawks are clearly out of the playoff picture. Towes and kane not so much unless they ask to be moved.

iF THE HAWKS ARE SERIOUS ABOUT A REBUILD. LETS LOOK INTO MOVING PATRICK KANE, THE ASSET WE WILL GET THE MOST RETURN FOR . GET A GOOD PROSPECT AND NUMBER ONE PICK AND MORE . IT WILL OPEN SOME CAP SPACE, SO MAYBE TAKE ON SOMEBODY ELSE DEAD WEIGHT FOR PICKS. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF TEAMS OUT THERE THAT COULD USE SOME CAP RELIEF - Ging72

CapFriendly is showing the Hawks have $11,163,687 in cap space. Theo is giving $2.5mil to Strome, $3.7mil to Kubalik. Let's say Suter is almost guaranteed a NHL roster spot at $925,000. Carlsson (or Kalynuk, or Mitchell) gets the order defender spot at $792,000 to $925,000. The back up goalie (Subban/Lankinen) will be about $850,000. They can put Smith on LTIR and that saves $3.25mil. (They may need to do some roster manipulation on the first day of the season to get Smith on LTIR). And don't forget Maatta's $750,000 cap hit retained.
Stan has to believe DeHaan, Seabs, and Shaw will be healthy enough to start the season.
That leaves $6.6mil+/- in cap space and a roster of:
13 forwards - Kane, Toews, ADB, Saad, Carp, Kampf, Dach, Nylander, Highmore, Strome, Kubalik, Suter, Shaw.
7 dmen - Keith, Seabs, DeHaan, Murphy, Boqvist, Carlsson, and Seeler or K4 (if signed)
2 goalies out of these 3 - Delia, Lankinen, Subban
LTIR - Smith
So Stan take a nap today and start scouting juniors and the EU for your lottery pick next year. (Although I would not mind if you picked up Kahun at a fair price.) |

I agree but isn't this his third team already? Maybe he has work ethic issues? |

Subban has the pedigree to be a starter as you said never had that role in the show . Maybe some confidence shown in him would help but not happening under this coach if recent history tell us anything .
Subban is a great teammate is my understanding and I think had some decent numbers when playing regular minutes due to injuries . If we are going full rebuild he is as good a candidate for the starting job as anyone , |

Still think Lakinnen will be the starter and will beat the other two out.
Got to get a nick name for him, can't spell his name, OK, going forward he will be Lakes. |

Stan picked the perfect dollar amount because if someone offer sheeted Kubalik for more, Stan would of taken the compensation (second round draft choice). Same thing with Strome's offer. |
