Honestly, I’m pretty impressed. Defense got a nice boost, way better in net. Some stability where it is needed.

I think this Red Wings team will compete and stay in games next year. Not a playoff team mind you. But not an embarrassment either. We'll steal some points from teams not taking us seriously.

That’s exactly it. Still weak at center, but the defense may be able to get the puck out instead of turning it over in the slot. The Stecher deal may be even better than it looks now. Ericsson, Daley, Green out, Stecher, Merrill and Staal in. That feels like a shift in the right direction. Howard out and Greiss in, that is a big improvement. Abdelkader out and Ryan in, i like it. Less than 8 million spent for the free agents is nice too

Plus Stevie can flip alot of these players at the trade deadline and stack even more draft picks. Stop gap Stevie did the same thing in Tampa when he first started. It kinda ended up working out fairly well in the long term. Placeholders buying time for prospects. 👍

Wings and NHL teams might need more bodies this season. Injuries might not be the only problem. What if a handful of players test positive and can't play for 2 weeks. Teams might need to bring up and down players more than previous seasons. I wonder if the NHL will waive waivers for cases like this where a couple of players test positive and a team needs to call up a bunch of players. If not then having lot of players that don't need to clear waivers would be a must.

If something like that Armada team in the Q happens with 18 people of staff and players test positive...what would they do then? Allow the team to dress an AHL team, forfeit the games or play them at a later date?

I think Erne is a Scratch, Smith goes to the 4th line, and Svechnikov is the 3RW. I also think Gagner is the 2C right now, not Fabbri. IIRC, Stevie Y said he sees Fabbri as a Wing more than a Center. But what do I know? Hahaha But the bigger question is Svechnikov.... because He is gonna get a chance this year you'd think...? So currently, this is what I see:

Bertuzzi-Larkin-Mantha
Zadina-Gagner-Fabbri
Svechnikov-Nielson-Ryan
Helm-Glendening-Smith

Filpula-Timoshov-Erne

DeKeyser (?)-Hronek
Nemeth-Stecher
Staal-Merrill

Biega

Griess
Bernier

Loving that D corps for this year though. Merrill and Stecher were 2 guys I really wanted. Especially Stecher at 26 right now and having played in the NHL for almost 300 games already. If he plays really well, He could be resigned and still be young enough yo be part of a core. If He doesn't , He's a UFA again at 28. That's about as win-win as it gets.

Smith or Svetch end up in the minors or both. You have 24 players on your roster and the max is 23. Yzerman is still looking to sign a forward apparently so both (Svetch and Smith) probably start off in the minors.

I think it would look more like this depending on what forward they sign:

Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha
Ryan - Fabbri - Zadina (could switch Ryan and Zadina)
Filppula - Nielsen - Gagner
Helm - Glendening - Erne/Timashov

Depending on who they sign that could push Ryan to 3rd line and Filppula or Gagner to 4th or out of the lineup. Then again Blashill is still coach so Helm/Glendening could end up on the 2nd line too. I do think whoever is hot in net will play as i don't think as either as the starter really.

The nice thing about adding Staal Stecher and Merrill is the impact it will have on the young, developing D men. Rushing defencemen into the league before they are ready never ends well and learning from some proven veterans is never a bad thing. I think it also helps that all 3 of these guys are well-respected professionals that will show the young guys what it takes to earn their place and stick around in this league.

Cholowski, McIsaac and Lindstrom are the 3 that might actually benefit the most in the long run

I think that’s a good point. With the players brought in (and the players exiting) Yzerman can bring some stability. Last year was a nightmare. The fact that Larkin is still all in and selling the team to newcomers is almost miraculous. We’ve seen players burn out and fold, just give up. Yzerman is trying to build a culture and letting go of the lethargy that can poison it. He spent a year watching and then made some decisive moves in relatively short order. Though it’s still rough sledding, it doesn’t have to be embarrassing

The other thing that jumps out at me is that Yzerman has already made a bunch of solid moves and we're still trying to piece together a true NHL lineup which is a true indication of how big of a mess Holland left behind

Thanks for that! Yeah, Yzerman doesn’t say much but when he makes a move it’s full bore. Impressive

Hey, good call. I think this is make-or-break for a couple of players: Colo & Svech. Word is out, time to fish or cut bait. The guys brought in are character guys (see my post earlier today...). Ryan...what a story this guy is. Stecher is blue-collar as can be. The kids need to see what's being said by the moves made: Abbey & Howard GONE....no one's safe if their attitude (or play) hurts the team. And that's the way it should be. I understand loyalty, but if you're subversive or usurp authority, you gotta go, Jack. Loyalty ends when when attitude hurts the team. 1 more year of burdensome contracts, then the final stamp of The Captain will be put on the culture change. I'm excited to see how the season goes....I feel good about the moves. Character....Larkin sweats more character getting out of bed than anyone his age....the kid gets the "C", he's earned it. And the team knows it. Things are turning, Wing's Faithful.
