You guys think we still make a run at Hall? Obviously Tre would have work to do, but I don't see them going in with the same forwards, somethings gotta change there, I would think. Top line didn't do much, if anything, 5vs5. If they do make a run, they would need to ship someone off. - Squilliam-
He'd have to make a big trade, which I guess could happen, but it would have to be Gaudreau because Hall isnt getting paid any less & he wont trade Gaudreau if unless he gets Hall at around 7.0 mill on a 5-6 year deal. That would be my guess & why hall is out there trying to get more $$$ from someone. Huge risk for him to take a 1 or 2 year deal. Nows the time to get at least that 6 year term. Timing sucks but thats life.
Im sure he doesnt want for anything or is destitute |

I find it so depressing that the Flames can make so many mistakes ( bad trades, bad signings) with their blue line over the past 3 years yet still ice an infinitely better Defence than the sad sack Oilers.
Hust shows the value of a guy like Giordano. |

It was probably the best Treliving could do to try & fill the #4 spot given the expansion draft upcoming. Brodie want a NMC Calgary couldnt give it to him or they would have to expose one of Gio, Andersen or Hanifin. Tanev was willing to take a limited NTC but that probably got him an extra year in the negotiations & maybe an extra $500K. Brodie got his limited NMC with Toronto, cant blame him. |

Both players will help the Flames improve, but I think both deals will look bad during the 2nd half of their lifespan. |

Yeah, basically true of any guy you sign after the age of 30.

Tanev is also a great locker room presence, all the Canucks young players mentioned how he made them feel more comfortable when they joined the team as rookies by inviting them over to have dinner with him and his wife. His nickname was “dad” lol |

So when the expansion draft rolls around, we'll have to protect Gio and Tanev (unless one or both waive their M-NTC) and we will then have to choose between Anderson and Valimaki? WTH? Gio is already winding down. He''l be lucky if he isn't demoted to a second-pair defenceman or worse by the end of this year. I understand that he's the captain, but where the hell were those intangibles in the playoffs. As soon as the playoffs start, he plays with fear and stops doing the things that earned him a rep as an elite defenceman, and instead takes untimely puck-over glass penalties that cost wins. If anyone from this core needs to go, then it's him. |

O, and with the Flames signing Louis Domingue to a one-year two way deal, does anyone thing that the writing is on the walls for Rittich to be traded to free up $2M in cap space? It wouldn't shock me at all. I think that after his drop in play again this spring, his lacklustre performance in the return to play and exhibition game, and then not being able to step in and step up in the poopshow that was Game 6 against Dallas, management has lost faith in him as much as he's show no faith in himself. |

No. He was signed because they don't have a 3rd NHL calibre goalie if someone gets hurt. It would also be pretty silly to give up on Rittich now. He's always been fantastic in the backup roll and is capable of giving them the 25+ starts a year they're going to need.

Tanev doesn't have to be protected. He doesn't have a NMC. Valimaki is exempt.

Exactly big difference in a NTC & a NMC, & I will bet money despite what some Flame fans say, no way do Flames not protect Gio. He's still a great 2nd pairing as he ages. We just need the young guys to step up their game. |

Evidently Parsons has a high ankle sprain that may keep him out for a long period of time. I loved when we drafted this kid but like Gilles, injuries (mental & physical) have hindered his development. |

Only if they can remain healthy. We know Tanev has problems there and Markstrom's groin issues haven't gone away. Will be interesting. |

Which is a bummer it was required. Zagidulin absolutely murdered the AHL for the first half of his season. He looked great in preseason too.
Then his play fell off and he finished the year below .900. :/ |

Read a rumour between CGY and PHI that apparently fell through because PHI didn’t want to include a 1st.
Gaudreau, Hanafin.
For
Konecny, Sanheim, 1st |

Konecny is fine but the offense the Flames would lose from Gaudreau wouldn’t be close to being filled. Sanheim and Hanifin are a wash. Sanheim is RFA next season while Hanifin is controlled at a good number.
Konecny’s got more jam by a long shot than Gaudreau but I think Gaudreau leaving creates his offensive hole and Monahan’s offense will deteriorate. Also, Konecny has 8 points in 22 playoff games. Not exactly bringing playoff scoring at a better clip than Gaudreau. |

In fairness then you need to point out we also realize a 2.9 mil cap savings this year too.
What could we do with the extra cap space to improve this year?
What is that 1st rounder worth next year?
There is no threat of Konecny walking in 2 years either.

I’d rather just keep Gaudreau. Almost a PPG player and there have been some pretty mediocre players surrounding him at times. |

Fair enough i'm in the other camp as I think his game is going in the wrong direction. I also put a premium on 1st round picks when it comes to long range planning in the cap era. |

I can see both sides and I’m not saying don’t trade Gaudreau. The thing that really worries me is “what is Monahan without Gaudreau?”. Monahan doesn’t do anything particularly well outside of shooting from the slot and winning face offs (eye test) and if he isn’t getting fed by Gaudreau then I’m worried that he’ll be even less effective. |

Have to wonder what agreement they made about the expansion draft. If everything goes well this season and Tanev is exposed, there's a pretty good chance Seattle takes him. They had to have discussed this, so either Treliving promised Tanev he wouldn't be exposed or Tanev is cool moving back to the coast after a year. |
