Of all places for Hall to sign he picks another sad sack franchise. I suppose next year he’ll go to Ottawa. - HonkyTonkMan
Dude, Ottawa is cup bound in a couple years.
They just need all their picks to turn into superstars. Their owner needs to win a lottomax or two. All their players want to sign there for less when they hit FA. The arena needs a new dedicated highway and parking. The CFL team has to fold. All the other players in the league have to remove Ottawa from their no-trade list. They need to put back the seats in the arena. The trojan man needs to suit up. Matt Murray needs to learn how to stop pucks again. The need to find enough paying fans to fill however many seats are left in the arena. They need to find an assistant GM who isn't sexually assaulting people. Chabot needs to become familiar with his own end. Crusty the Clown Alfredsson has to take over as GM. They need to stop bad-mouthing management during cab rides. They need a few more players named Brown...
Other than that, they are on their way. Taylor Hall will be in icing on the cake.

Ottawa is gonna be awesome very soon. He would be lucky to get on board. - sokosteve
They might still need a thing or two to turn around first. |

Certainly a flub. Especially with how Tippett misused Smith last year.
Pros: it's only 1.5 and "should" stay closer to 1.5 if Smith is used properly. I've heard he can be buried for only .5 mill but I don't know if true.
Cons: you mention that this decision is terrible especially on day 2. It gets worse. Smith is given a full no movement clause as well. Terrible. Our management actually believes in Smith... Absolutely mind blowing. |

Not a NMC, just a NTC. As such, he CAN be assigned to the AHL and thus have 1.075mil of his cap be buried in the event that Forsberg or Skinner eat his lunch. |

They very well might be, but we have seen, more often than not, that the scorched earth rebuild doesn’t work very often, and certainly not very quickly. Pittsburgh did it pretty quick about 5 years after first picking in the top 5 but Toronto, Buffalo, Edmonton, Florida, Montreal And of course Edmonton all Found themselves in similar situations and none at all Managed to become very good, very soon. An awful lot has to right in very short order. |

Barrie was given every chance to succeed in TO and he fluffed it, Reilly suffered as a result of the Barrie experiment as well. Good riddance to hot trash, he should fit right in in Oil country - kkvslayer

Pierre McGuire likes the Turris signing...
That should say enough. |

That Schmidt trade is an example of why Neal should’ve been bought out this year of all years. Amazed no one out of the division matched that offer. |

Smith is fine for a backup. They say his level of compete is contagious and is valuable both on and off the ice. Which is great for a backup. Problem is that they don’t have a starter.
They pay Kosk like he is one but he really isn’t and never was a proven number one guy. He is still a great player but he is not in the top 31 of netminders in the NHL and they arguably had the chance to get one this offseason.
I say arguably because I am not certain they could get a deal that worked with their cap situation. I mean I could say that they could trade Larsson, Russell and Kosk to free cap space (holding half of Kosk’s salary and “motivating” Russell to waive his NTC). Then trading the assets they get from these guys for Kuemper or Korpisalo (the only decent goalies left on the market).
My saying it doesn’t make it reality though.
Markstrom was overpaid and Holtby wanted to play in Vancouver. There were others but they have similar stories.
As it is, this team is better than the Oilers were at the start of last season. They can make the playoffs which means the Oilers can go out and address their goaltending at the trade deadline. Right now teams are all about the tandem goalies but they will change their tune before the expansion draft. |

For 2 million bucks who could we have got that was better than Smith. We still have to fit in Bear under the cap which means someone has to go.

Edmonton-native Dell just signed on to be a 3rd string in Toronto for 800k and his numbers were better behind a worse team. |

Although with the Edmonton tax that's equivalent to 2 million. All players take a discount to play for the Leafs and the Oilers would have to overpay.

Sorry, but that's an exaggeration. With the economic instability surrounding COVID, I don't think a goalie takes 800k to go play 3rd string in Toronto when Edmonton would hypothetically be offering 1.5mil for him to play the backup role. |

Sean Maloughney: Holland Trips At Finish Line, Signs Mike Smith - freelancer
Acquiring Turris and Barrie was huge, while bring Pulj back all combining for under 6M is absolutely fantastic. Barrie's "down" year was still as good as most #1RD's in the league. Turris and Pulj will help address the issues at bottom 6. Pretty impressive given the cap space you had to work with! |
