I agree with this. This is one where JB could have done better. But I'm sure there is a plan...

I liked to have had TT back and he signed a reasonable contract which is raising temperatures here.
However, how many kept saying don't sign him long term or at all because he's slow and will drop off. Against VGK he did nothing to convince us he could be a difference maker.
So not giving TT term opens up the long term door to the two top prospects (Hogs & Podz) to take over in the top 6. We'll see where JV lands. He could still continue to grow or become trade bait in season to make room for Podz. |

RD thinks owner tightened purse strings. - VanHockeyGuy
Makes sense.
Aqua probably mandated short-term, low cost contract offers and JB struck out.
I guess we get to see what OJ and Hoglander bring to the table this year.
Maybe Lind and Rathbone too.
Later Podz and Tree.

It’s not like we resigned Smitty and went after Barrie! We can’t all be that smart! - K-man25
Barrie was a solid signing.
Not a fan of Smith, but at least it was 2 years, not 6. |

Perception of TT signing will be a challenge for the Canucks so the pressure is on them to find ways to be a playoff team next season.
From a business standpoint, I understand not signing support pieces to contracts beyond two years. Fans won’t like it but who knows when games will have full crowds again.
Many don’t view Benning as having a plan and although no one would describe him as creative or as a smooth operator, he has been clear about the overall plan:
Draft high character players, insulate the young drafted players with vets, and add the drafted players to the NHL lineup when ready (even if it means at the expense of a vet). I.E. Benning trusts his drafting (with or without Brackett).
Petey and Hughes’ ascension has only added to the pressure (a good problem to have) so Benning will have to be creative over the short term (not a strong suit of his). Over the long-term, IMHO they are in a good position and will be ready to push forward next offseason and the season after.
Given moves so far, team is clearly focused on spending money on defence and is likely ready to show faith in some of the drafted players. Pod, Hogs, Lind, OJ, etc. will all get a chance to play (Pod will be perfect for Petey and Miller - puck retrieval machine, great forechecker, and a very good passer).
Marky - two year offer in Feb showed that Demko was always their goalie of the future. Marky is great but time to move on.
Tanev - four years was too long, tough but true.
Stecher - Green is not a fan so serious effort was not made to bring him back.
TT - four years was obviously not in the cards. PR issue and team needs to utilize the flexibility intelligently.
April next season:
Miller Petey Podz
Pearson Bo BB
Motte Gaudette Virt
Rous Sutter Mac
Hughes xxx
Edler xxx
OJ Myers
Demko
Holtby
I think the team really believes in Podz (will see if justified). Team also really believes in Demko. The team’s main focus should be acquiring one solid dman to pair with Edler - no reason Benn, etc. can’t look solid beside Hughes (not ideal but a good stop gap while young players develop further.
Many are freaking out but patience is still the best option. Will be interesting to see the starting lineup next season - no matter what the result, fans will continue to be divided and loyal to their tribes.

This is definitely the direction to have ELCs to leave money for core.

RD thinks owner tightened purse strings. - VanHockeyGuy
Still don’t buy it. He gave JB the green light to acquire a guy making 8M, 10.5M, 10.5M, 10.5M during the next 4 years. Even with giving up a Sutter or Roussel + Virtanen, that’s the exact opposite of penny pinching.
I think ownership flat out told JB that he has to ask them before signing anyone or trading for any anyone with term. And ownership is only approving big names like OEL.
I think this is a lack of trust between ownership and management. |

Good signing by Mtl though.
Apparently no NTC or NMC included for TT.
Their top 9 looks strong w a good mix of vets and ELCs.
Drouin-Suzuki-Anderson
Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
Toffoli-Kotkaniemi-Armia
our top line winger is Mtl's 3rd liner. |
