What Hahn did doesn't work in the NHL who's going to give you cheap rising stars or top prospects for expensive players?

It really is apples and oranges and not applicable.

I remember the days of Kruger on the 4th line, definitely not an offensive specialist by any means but what those group of Forwards did was exactly what Vegas did to us in the playoffs, tilted the ice, made us play defense chasing the puck. Everyone gets enamored with scoring but 1 of the things during out championship years that we were outstanding at was our 3rd and 4th line would cycle the puck in the offensive zone for close to a minute several times a game. We're lucky to get 20 seconds now.

Agreed. I would love to see a 3rd line capable of taking it to the other team. The series against the Knights was rough. We were clearly outclassed in every way against them. With the Big Z and now Janmark, the Hawks have some size/edge/nasty injected into the line up.

And of those ten teams, who knows how many had cap space and were looking to add a veteran winger? One, two? - certainly not all ten.

Sakic knew the situation Stan was dealing with - and used his leverage well.

I hope Stan starts to realize that NMCs/NTCs are sometimes worse than going a little more on $/term with a player’s contract.

- Chief4Feathers

Hawks have 4 NMC contracts. Each player that has them has 3 Stanly Cup rings. Smith has a NTC, but he is untradeable anyway, especially if he is on LTIR.

Capfriendly says $2.25mil.
- -Doh-

Touche car salesperson, touche. Still 750k more than Caggs cap hit and a year older with less offense and more turnovers as LBR mentioned. 4th line should be young guys like Highmore and Entwhistle, Kurashev, Barrat, etc on ELC’s.

Entwhistle/Barratt/Highmore would be a Nasty Boys 4th Line and a female dog to play against with a combined cap hit of around $2.4 mil. Carpenter would be a great 3C flanked by Janmark and Shaw.

Scott Power wrote a nice rebuild article, but he really isn't getting solid info on the 2021 draft, and of course he is thinking they are getting a luck jump into the top three of the lotto.
Here is my more realistic and knowledgable look at the draft class.

and Arizona means one less team in the LOTTO, since they had to forfeit their selection.

So Bowman pays $2.2 on a 27 year old washed up, often injured center who was moved to winger.

Is this rebuilding or retooling??

Which is why I question Stan's timing in the deal. He could have moved him a week or a month ago before his NTC kicked in to possibly more landing spots.

And weren't their people complaining that Bowman waited to late to make a move on Sharp and Leddy, if memory serves me correctly

Wiz, how is the possibility that at least in the CHL there will be no games (because of COVID restrictions) next year affect scouting reports? I heard there has been a suggenstion that the CHL play no check shinny hockey. Brian Burke said they might as well just shut it down, it will hurt prospects more than help.

Is this rebuilding or retooling?? Theo Epstein playbook. Collect assets that you can flip at the trade deadline for picks.

Do you think Stevie Y. signed Gagner, Bobby Ryan, Stetcher, Merrill as building blokcs in their rebuild?

I'm wondering if they are waiting until they can LTIR players, so they can give Strome his money and also sign an extra free agent or two.
- 333inthe3rd

I expect more signings too. I'm not sure if the LTIR comes into play or not. Who knows with how everything is going on?

Correction

Cap update

14 forward - With Strome (at $2.5mil), Suter, and Smith included.
Kane, Toews, ADB, Carp, Dach, Kampf, Nylander, Highmore, Shaw, Janmark, Suter, Kubalik, Smith, and Strome.

7 defenders -
Seabs, Keith, Murphy, Zadorov, DeHaan, Boqvist, and one of Carlsson, Mitchell, Kalynuk.

2 goalies -
(pick your poison from Delia, Lankinen, Subban)

Plus salary retained on Saad/Maatta.

$77.9 mil
$81.5 mil Cap ceiling
$ 3.6 mil available under the cap

You can decide when they LTIR Smith (or what they do with him). But that is another $3.25 mil.

Often injured? The last 4 years, he's played 73, 81, 81, 62 (COVID)

HE GONE!!

Love this news. Glad they got it over with. The team is too good to be held back by an inept manager.

He looked better against Vegas than the shleprocks we trotted out.

Also, to LBR's point about penalties, in 297 games, he's committed 38 penalties. By contrast, Toews committed 44 penalties in just the last two years.

I don’t think he’s washed up and definitely not often injured. Last three seasons played 81, 81, and 62 games in the short season. Plus 26 playoff games this season.

If Shaw, Seabs, DeHaan or anyone else is not ready to go they can land on LTIR. We will just have to wait and see. But it will probably be on Day 2 of the season and it likely will not effect signings before the season starts.
