Not many trade suitors out there -
Maybe something around Ghost + Raffl for Tyler Johnson + Coburn with salaries evened out - Bayareaflyer
Eww no.
I don't hate Raffl, but he has very little value to any team outside of philly. I really would like to replace him with a more skilled player. |

Well now I feel like he's backed himself into a corner because he has to do something. We couldn't win with this team the previous year and now we're down one of our top 2 dmen. We're literally going backwards. |

The plan was supposed to be wait out cash strapped team and pounce. That hasn’t happened. He signs a player that is square peg in round hole stuff. I don’t see what the plan is right now. I’ll see if there is another move. But what’s happened so far doesn’t make any sense. - PLindbergh31
Hard to disagree, I’m thinking GM’s thought there might be a little wheeling and dealing but it appears cap and real hockey deals win the day

Fletcher seems to have contradicted himself with his statement that he’s not going to sign a player simply for the sake of making a move. On the surface that is exactly what he did. I get the season doesn’t start tomorrow, but he let the parade go by when there could have been some players that could have been signed. Now it’s not much of a market it would t seem. I guess we will see what happens. |

Good luck finding a more skilled 4th line player. Raffl is one.of the best 4th line players in the entire league.

The Flyers will lose every game this season because these (this) move will be the only move(s) they can make before the next playoff season starts.

Bill Meltzer: Flyers Sign Erik Gustafsson to a one-year contract - bmeltzer
I wanna make a point of all points based on what I’ve read the last few days. First, I want Chuck Fletcher to stop spending money as of today. If it ain’t a replacement for Matt Niskanen, I don’t want it. The rumors had me at Nate Schmidt but of course the Flyers didn’t act and the Canucks did.
Until Fletcher plugs a few holes, it’s probably best to not get too excited for the coming season. There was Optimism a year ago because Fletcher made major deals putting us over a certain hump. It is now a year later and guess what? Other teams have done what we did a year ago. We’ve lost. Other teams have gained.
People make fun of Bobby Ryan coming here but Ryan at a million is a missed opportunity. Bobby Ryan might be a washed up star but he’s motivated. He’s in the same boat Corey Perry was one year ago and Perry’s situation to a degree has worked out. Bobby Ryan couldn’t be any worse than Dale Weise. For those who liked that signing at the time (and there were a few), you’ll never admit it now.
You’ve gotta be proactive when movement is hot. |

Hockey, unlike baseball where it drags out or football with cuts, tends to get very quiet after the first few days of Free Agency. The main majority of additions/subtractions take place very early in the offseason.
I’m not saying the Flyers won’t make another move. But the likelihood is slim. That $3 million really cut into what they had left, especially with the two RFAs. He obviously signed Gustafsson with the expansion draft in mind. So even if teams are looking to sell, the Flyers may not have the cap space or the team they are looking to trade with might not.
I felt it was time for them to be aggressive. One game away from the conference finals, with goaltending in place. So yes, I’m frustrated with the direction the team has taken to this point.

I mean, this is clearly just a set up move for the expansion draft, right? They don’t want to expose Myers, and they certainly won’t let Provy or Sanheim go. If they signed a long term replacement for Niskanen, Myers would be as good as gone.
It’s a patch job for one year. That’s it. They’ll wanna save a little room for their signings, which shouldn’t cripple them, and maybe make a splash in a year or so. |

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!! OMG people, give it a rest! The way I hear it Niskanen was the second coming of Bobby Orr and what are we going to do now!!!
1) First off Fletcher was never going to sign a big name D-man just to lose 1 of our top 4 defensemen to Seattle for nothing! He at least learned that the hard way(see Minnesota). If we signed Petrangelo (or anyone else) for 7 years at 8 mil which D-man would you leave available to Seattle? You can only protect 3?
2) If he did sign a D-man to a long term contract then how does he pay Hart and Sanheim next year when all his money is tied up? That would result in selling off a player or 2. We already see how that plays out when no one wants to take T Johnson off TB hands for nothing. So who would help us out!
3) Last time I checked the Stanley Cup is not won in January! Give our prospects a chance! We have a very good young team already. Guys like Myers, Sanheim, Provorov, TK, Linblom, are just going to get better. Maybe we have a couple more prospects ready to take the next step, Zamula, Robutsov, Laczynski, Allison, etc, If they brought some of these guys to the bubble they must be close. Until we know more let’s hope Patrick will be cleared to resume his career.
4) If they are ready to step in then you saved a crap load of money and did not lose anything, if they are not then you look for a trade partner before the deadline when non playoff teams are more likely to make a deal for a rental.
5) You make it sound like Fletcher should spend every dime and buy a player ASAP! The salary cap is flat for next year at least so why not just spend it all this year! They will need a little bit of flexibility to have some room for the trade deadline next year in case they have a hole or 2 to fill then! The Flyers already have 3 Albatross contracts they can’t get out of I don’t wanna see anymore!
Bottom line this is a playoff team right now barring anything crazy happening. Aside from a few veterans that may be on the downslide, this team will be even better next year. You need to stock
Pile young talent to win in today’s game so you can fill the holes with low cost alternatives or Veteran minimums.

This is basically what I’m sayin, but in long form.
I agree, man. I don’t think it’s a big deal. It’s just a move to get them through the Seattle draft.
