I knew as soon as the Redskins gave in, the protests against the Hawks logo would ramp up. As much as the Hawks try to partner with the Native American community, there are still people that don't like the logo. If you follow the Hawks on Insta, there is a guy that replies on every post, "Change the name, change the logo".
I digress.
Not a peep about Strome's contract. Granted Bowman has been pretty busy lately. I still wonder if there is a sign and trade in the works. They have a whole bunch of guys that play center, but they could also sign Strome and buy out Smith. There are definitely more moves coming. |

Ya, the 3C of the core takes a beating here for a while now, and some of it deserved, remember the diet......again, he's the only I see female dogin about anything.
I've seen Lazerus story say "sources" but Toews is the only one I've seen quoted.
Makes me believe its Toews, and Lazerus is covering for him by saying sources, and its all 4 of them. - vabeachbear
First, Lazerus is useful because he is on the Hawks "beat" and there is a dearth of such in the Chicago sports scene, but I don't really care for him for a couple reasons, one of which is that he likes to stir the pot to make news rather than just report on it.
Of the remaining core-4 and their role in publicly airing dirty laundry of management disrespect, Toews has multiple episodes and Keith at least one. Seabrook complained about being benched but I don't think that is quite the same thing so I give him a pass on that. I don't recall Kane ever speaking out to position himself against management.
Where do we go from here? Probably nowhere because sometimes things are said in the passion of the moment and then it kind of quietly goes away. That would be the best thing. If however this is something that doesn't quietly go away and it becomes a divisive issue, then I would hope Toews and Keith would go away, however that would be accomplished. Seabrook can't play commensurate with his cap anymore hit so he is (again) in a different category than the other 3. And then there's Kane.
First, Kane is the only one that is still playing at an all star level so that's kind of relevant. But more than that, Kane has grown into a model citizen right before our eyes. After much publicized immature indiscretions and coming within a wisp of being indicted in the court of public opinion, he has seen the error or his ways and lived life on the straight and narrow, at least publicly. He has always been and continues to be a rink rat trying to improve his game and this hasn't waned after he achieved fame and fortune.
In summary, I would hate to see Kane leave the Hawks. I still like and respect Seabrook and hope his surgeries allow him to play at a level that isn't hurting the Hawks on the ice. As for Toews and Keith - if they can't get on board and keep their mouths shut - I won't shed a tear to see them leave. |

I could be wrong but I think the buy out period has passed.

I may be in the minority, but if Wirtz is forced to change the name/logo of the team, I would prefer him to just shut down the Blackhawks franchise and start a new Chicago NHL franchise. I would hate to see the Blackhawks with a Tommy hawk logo. That could not be the same team.

Most likely the Hawks presented the minimum qualifying offer to retain his rights and they're simply trying to negotiate a contract. If Stan is not willing to overpay, good on Stan.
Strome really doesn't have a whole lot of leverage. Maybe he should have played the season with a bit more urgency since he knew going in his contract was expiring. Typically players in any sport will up their game when they know they're in the last year of their contracts to maximize the $ for the next one. Strome just wasted oxygen on some nights.
I'm not sure if Smith is on LTIR or not. Cap Friendly shows he is not. If he is on LTIR he can't be bought out. |

I think when Hockey and politics intersect, it should be fair game to talk about it...as long as it stays civilized. |

Who really cares? In the end it’s just a logo for a sports team. This is not the life or death decision that many make it out to be. Nothing is forever, and everything evolves.

Agree. I think it will be a sad day but I can see the other side of the coin and why the logo might need to change.
If it were me, I would start using the third jerseys as a way to roll out different logos. Through merchandise sales, they could get an idea what might resonate with fans. |

There is a town in upstate New York named Swastika. It was named before WW II - before Hitler appropriated the symbol for his evil purposes. But that’s what the term has become associated with.
The town councilors voted this year to keep the name. They have their reasons - the name predates WW II, it has peaceful meanings in Sanskrit and Hindu history, they are not trying to offend Jews and WW II veterans....
They are wrong. As a Jew, I am offended. Those non-Jewish Swastikans in New York do not have the right to determine what offends me as a Jew. They should recognize what the term means today, that it is offensive, and they should change the name.
We who are not members of a large, recognized segment of society - especially a marginalized segment - do not have the right to determine what offends them, especially when it comes to symbols, images, icons that are central to their culture.
We should be more empathetic to the feelings of others. |

Intent doesn’t matter either. The Blackhawks logo was not intended to offend anyone, but it does. |

But something is always going to offend someone, so who gets to be be offended and who gets to be pacified? I do not know the answer.

Quote from Gus as published by the HB Flyer blogger.
Recently signed defenseman Erik Gustafsson spoke by video conference with members of the media on Tuesday. The player opined that, while he didn't come close to matching the offensive career highs he set in 2018-19 (17 goals, 60 points for Chicago), he took important strides in improving as an all-around hockey player. "Gus" said that he aims to evolve into more of a two-way defenseman. He admitted that he still has work to do in his defensive game but feels he will be a good fit in Alain Vigneault's systems. |

When you look at the list of unsigned RFA's (and most will eventually be resigned) and then the amount of cap space remaining on the teams' chart, it makes one wonder where the $ are going to come from to sign the remaining UFA's. A lot of these guys are probably adjusting their $ demands as their desired location lists shorten.
Would you take a chance on yet another Swede on a one year cheap contract. Soderberg is a guy that stood out for me when we played the Coyotes. I like the one year deals Stan has made so far and would not be averse to adding more of these. We have not been able to get any picks this off season but that could change at the TDL if you have some useful cheap assets to offer. |

And therein lies the problem. As we pacify one, another pops up. So where does it end? Or does it ever? |

It's not only the free agents that will take up whatever cap space remains, but also players that have to be moved from teams that are either over their internal budget (ARI), or have to sign their RFAs (TBL).
Speaking of TB, read where they will have to include a pick as a sweetener to move Johnson.

I think it will take more than that, with the term left on his contract.
In regards to the Saad return. Look at the other trades/FA signings for forwards. A very depressed market. All the monies went to defenseman and goalies.

It ends when racism in all of its forms, anti-Semitism, gender inequality, homophobia end - when fear of “the other” ends - when inclusion becomes the norm....
It ends when the issue isn’t “pacification” but rather understanding and consideration. It’s not a matter of “as we pacify one...”
Then the Indianhead logo and other symbols won’t be an issue, they may become innocuous symbols that won’t offend.
Until then - we need to recognize the offenses we do give to others. |

He never came close to matching those number in any year at any level before 2018-19. An outlier of a year has gotten him a $3MM deal. |

Canadians may find "Canuck" to be offensive.
Religious groups may not like the "Devil" logo.
Animal rights people may not like "Ducks", "Sharks", "Panthers" or any depictions of protected species displayed in that manner. |

Thankfully the Hawks did not sign him. To other points in this string, Keith really hasn't been all that great on the power play and a lot of Gustafsson's success that 17 goal year was on the PP. That is, until they really needed it to make the playoffs. Just like Nylander, I doubt that Gustafsson will ever figure out the defensive end. Until he does, he will not have a long-term home.

There's no need to change the name, really. Just have it refer to a hawk, the bird. Not a native person of this land.
Gotta change the logo, though. My beloved logo. I'll be sad to see it go, but really, in the bigger picture, it's the least we can do. I mean, the very least... And I'm well aware of it's popularity. - 4_in_7 o?
Keep nie change logo to tomahawk C.
Connects as a weapon of war that indigenous persons probably don't want to attach to?

We should be life time learners and our society did gloms over much of our true history and injustices.
Righting the present physical manifestations of our pasts is correct, we gotta stop being rude.
We just dont realize it, me included.
It won't be easy for me to lose the sweater and maybe the name.
But I also have to resign myself to the large possibility we do not win another Cup in my lifetime....
back to hockey:
No matter what Mike Hoffmn thinks he is worthy, he is a shot in the same way Kubalik is at a lower price...not a fireball up ice, not a huge edgy impact presence in his defensive game.
A team is getting a scorer, paying for a scorer. The rest of this 30 year old game is not comparable to the the Lightnings third line.

New wheeler article on The Athletic.
Oh suddenly all of these experts see the deficiencies in Byram Bowen's defensive game...I guess my eyes were the only ones not focused in the hype?
Moere curieus is the fact he thinks Evan Bouchard has more future upside than Moritz Seider (who is not Booby Orr, but will soften you like Orr did!) and Thomas Harley.
At some point people have to realize defenseman has a big job and junior is where yo learn both ends...
