Rust 17-20

5v5 CF% - 52.53, GF% - 55.14, xGF% - 53.43 P/60 - 1.9

All positive relative stats...on a better team.

Laine has never scored on a PPG pace, Rust did this year.

Laine has always gotten PP1 time, Rust got small amounts this year alone, and he PK's well.

Rust has been a really solid player, just a couple comments.

1. Rust spent most of his time with Crosby and Malkin, Laine was with Little and Copp... not a small difference.

2. Laine is 22, Rust is 29. Rust is going to slow down and Laine hasn't reached his physical peak. Rust has never had a healthy season, played more than 70 games once in his career.

None of this intended to knock Rust, as he has been awesome for the Pens but its just such a bad arguement.

You said rust is better than Laine. That’s a troll job if I’ve ever seen one lol

Have you never seen MacPatty post before? It's not a troll job.

Either way, Rust might be better than Laine, but I'd bet the house Laine is valued way higher due to pedigree and perceived goal scoring acumen. His goal scoring tool box is pretty incredible and I bet due to his age, GM's around the league are still confident he can put it all together in the right environment.

I think this trade would work out pretty poorly for both sides. Winnipeg could probably get more value in futures by taking a GM to the cleaners, and the Penguins would be swapping Rust for a forward that might continue his developmental trajectory into a worse player, and throw in one of our top D men and it's a huge loss for us from an on ice perspective.

Look at Kessel stats when he was Laines age or last year. I like Kessel, I just think looks to be a bit better. Would you prefer I call him a not quite Ovie?

Laine hasn't had a chance to play with an Elite center. Crosby has never had the chance to play with an elite shooter. Match made in heaven there...

Does Laine not play at all with Schiefele? This is a legit question, as I don't pay attention to the Jets enough to know.

The 2018 (114 standings points) and 2019 (99 standings points) Jets teams were pretty strong.

Thats what what you picked out of that? The Jets were a good team...i know that and still, i think the Pens were better. Laine still should not have negative relative stats.

I said he had elite offensive touch, meaning shot, pretty much nothing else.

And i would agree his percieved value is probably through the roof. Didn't he request to be traded last offseason though?

I don't think Rust is better than Laine, but they're also very different players. I think Rust is a more well-rounded player, but Laine's offensive ability is elite. If there's no cap issues, you take Laine over Rust all day every day, but we don't live in a world with no cap. For a team like the Pens, IMO Rust offers better value at $3.5M than the price Laine will likely come in at, and going by Mac's proposal, giving up both Rust and Dumo who cost slightly more combined than Laine will make, you wind up hurting this team.

But the fact is defense matters, and every player has to play defense 1-2 times per shift and transition 2-4 times. You cannot just not count those parts of someones game, and then say "well hes offensively elite so he is better". I know offensive skill and awareness are much much harder to teach, but they aren't impossible. not letting someone score is just as important as scoring.

You mean like when the Pens won two cups with Phil Kessel?

I don't think Laine is as good as Kessel. We also had Bryan Rust. And i wouldn't trade bryan rust for Phil Kessel either. I would trade him for someone like or Mark Stone, Gallagher, Younger Kunitz. I am not saying that hes as good as those players. but those are the types of players that i would add rust to a trade to get it done. they have skillsets in addition to just shooting, that help a team. Laine does not.

Kessel is devoid of any defensive game, so I'm just pointing out that your point isn't very valid.
