What's the new package? JV + 2nd? JV + Rafferyt/OJ + 2nd? |

We finally dumped our slow and soft smurf and you want to replace him with an equally slow and soft smurf that is even softer? Yikes. At least Hamonic can PK - CanuckDon
Hamonic is a broken shell of his former self and in my view, wouldn't be much of an upgrade on Benn lol.
Vatanen is a touch younger and can actually move the puck. I don't believe he is all that slow either? Also, are referencing Stecher? In what world was he slow? |

Would take Hamonic on the third pairing over Vatanen for sure.
Would still rather make a trade for a long term RHD solution, though. - NewYorkNuck
I'd rather Hamonic on a low cost 1 year. This is not the year to be trading for someone needing protection IMO. We for sure need to protect OJ and NS, is Hughes exempt or does he also need to be protected?
Hamonic provides a steady guy to pair with OJ and can PK. If we have a down year he can also get us a future asset. |

I don’t really see Vatanen as an upgrade on stecher and he is made of glass. I don’t like Hamonic either I’m just saying at least he provides size and PK utility |

Good little tool to see who would need to be protected. Hughes is exempt, so we can still trade for/protect another D if we want. As it is right now, would we probably protect:
F:
Boeser, Horvat, JTM, Petey, Gaud, JV, 1 other
D:
OJ, Schmidt, 1 other
G:
Demko
Who can be worth being taken (assuming they play the requisite number of games):
F:
Motte, Lind, MacEwen, Gadjovich, Palmu
D:
Myers, Rafferty, Catfield, Breisbois

Would it not be better to get someone in the top 6 forwards?
I'm ok with packing up Pearson/Gaudette/JV but with Toffoli gone who rounds out the last two spots in our top 6 forwards? Right now we have:
Pettersson
Horvat
Miller
Boeser - LordHumungous
If Horvat is paired with a Hoffman/Granlund/Dadonov instead of Pearson, it’s much easier to find a 3rd wheel like a Leivo that’ll fit in. I don’t like having Pearson as the 2nd best player on a top 6 line. Bo has to carry that line on his back offensively if Pearson is his go-to winger. |

I would imagine it would feel like a solid step up from 17. Depends what game modes you play, having played a bunch of 20 and now seeing what they've delivered vs. what they promised for 21, I'm mildly disappointed. Then again it is EA, one of the laziest most money hungry game dev companies so I dunno what I expected |

Yes, I’d take him over Pearson easily. Was hoping for 3 years though, if he wanted 4 I would’ve offered like 3.8M |

Of course. No one would prefer Pearson. Although, I’m think I’d rather have Pearson on an expiring contract than being tied to TT for 4 years. Too much term |

I understand wanting to keep Pearson from a defensive point of view, but I think trading him while his value was high this off season would have been a great move. |

I’d take TT over 4 years at like 3.8M with a limited NTC for the first 2 years(10 teams he can say no to) and then nothing for the next 2 seasons. MTL gave him zero protection so I think he would’ve seriously considered it since his heart seemed set on Vancouver. Montreal wants him to play LW too and here he’d be playing RW with either Bo or EP.
I would’ve then traded Virtanen + Benn for a pick or Pearson alone for scraps to make it work with the cap.
But that ship has sailed so I’d attempt to do the same with one of Dadonov/Granlund/Hoffman
I think I’m lower on Pearson than most of the fanbase. He’s a 3rd wheel at best on a 2nd line and more of a solid 3rd liner to me |

Read that this morning and knew it would make it here. I'm sure some will dismiss this version of events as media speculation but I don't think the Athletic would jeopardize their relationship with the Canucks if it wasn't true.
That said, I had forgotten Schmidt had a 20 team NMC so how many of the 10 teams on his list had cap? It sounds like at least some of the other teams were trying to get Vegas to take back another contract to make it work.
Good on Benning for not (frank)ing around and pulling the trigger quickly to get the deal done. He might of been able to play ball and gotten more assets, retention or swapped contracts but he might of also lost the deal.

Ya I like Pearson but bit of a Tweener. I have no idea how they can afford a legit winger for Bo this year or next with their cap constraints. Really need a prospect to pan out |

The Athletic article VHG posted also mentioned that the Canucks were basically stuck holding their cap space waiting for the Schmidt deal. Obviously they could of still signed TT and used the overage space but they decided not too.
From the outside, the Canucks’ weekend unfolded in baffling fashion from there. The fact is, however, that the club really only had about an eight-hour window — from when they dropped the pursuit of Ekman-Larsson on Friday morning, to when Vegas contacted the club about acquiring Schmidt on Friday evening — in which the club behaved like a traditional “buyer” on the free agent market.
Outside of that eight-hour window, the Canucks’ primary concern was maintaining available cap space that would permit them to complete a trade for a defender that the club viewed as a clear upgrade. By Saturday morning, protecting that cap flexibility was the club’s main priority.
It’s much the same story with Tyler Toffoli, who signed with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, although the emotions were less raw in Toffoli’s case. The Canucks — who were always primarily focused on upgrading their defence — never really made a late push.
Vancouver kept in touch with Toffoli’s camp and expressed consistent interest in the player, but the two sides never got close to making a deal. Vancouver’s available cap space was spoken for, at least for planning purposes. |
