Well yeah that theory has been exposed as a dumb one
- Nucker101

Sadly, that dumb theory would have been the prevailing opinion in this thread had Schmidt not been acquired.

Farhan is dumb dumb....

Did Vegas just call Benning and say here you go of you give me a third... no.

Was it plan a, no, that was OEL, plan b, no, that was Barrie, it might not even have been plan c, but there was a conversation where Benning told him he give them to call him if they got Petr and needed to shed cap.

- Pres.cup

Plan A was to be patient. Plan B was to be patient. Plan C was to be patient.

It paid off. That is all.

Hughes and Schmidt will be 1-2 in Norris voting on this thread.

I’ll start the controversy now...

Why do you think Benning only offered 1/2 year contracts in FA? He learned or pressure from ownership? Completely different approach to free agency than every other year. Perhaps it was a combination

One other thing - there was some chatter on Twitter over the weekend that VGK was looking to trade Schmidt to Florida.

https://twitter.com/andys...tatus/1315424604790370304

I'm sure McCrimmon would much rather have done that, than trade him to a division rival. Interesting that Benning was able to move in and get it done.

Dude will be a fan fave if not already 👍

It’s good to know that he and Holtby are great teammates because by all accounts, Marky and especially Tanev were really popular in the locker room.

English words hard

Not sure what he's getting at though. Not resigning TG because his team isn't as good? Like it's his fault?

thanks for the business advice, tips.

anyway, this is a good trade for the canucks. that we can agree on. i find it humorous how some people get so defensive about needing to defend jb. even when he does something good, he has to be made out to be some sort of infallible futurist!

- RealityChecker

funny, I find it humorous that even when he does something good, he is still made out to be some incapable idiot.

Goes both ways RC, in the last 2 blogs there has been a hundred pages Benning bashing, then a phenomenal trade and 2 pages of praise followed by another 20 of Benning bashing.

Regardless of our takes here, I still You guys, peace out boys.

So who gets put on the 2nd powerplay, Myers or Schmidt, or even both?
- phyllee

PP1: Bo Petey Brock JTM Hughes
PP2: Gaudette JV Pearson/Ferland/Hoglander Myers Schmidt

Doesn't matter that much. PP2 gets like 45 seconds a game. But man, what a steep drop off in skill

Apologize if this was already posted, but this is Schmidt’s interview today:

https://www.pscp.tv/w/1vAGRrkNAozGl?t=1s&s=09

Skip ahead 30 seconds for it to start

- Nucker101

Good interview, he is definitely heart broken over it, but I think he gets over it pretty quickly.

Well that’s all and good for Farhan (whoever the (frank) he is in the Canucks organization), but I’m not going to sit here and pretend that Benning doesn’t have a plan.

Farhan.... So Jim wants your plan with acquiring a top 2 defenseman

Jim...... Luck Farhan, we have no plans, all poop house luck, I manage a $500 million organization with no plan, the secret is poop house luck.

They actually look the same imo. D + , forwards a wash. Toffoli barely played. Goaltending may be worse or it may not
- CanuckDon

True but the Canucks have kickstarted the Demko era so the growing pains would be expected and no one should whine about that.

If there's one thing JB has been constant with in his time as GM, it's drafting and trading for good character guys. Aside from maybe Virtanen, everyone he's brought to the team is well liked and a team-first player.

That's an exaggeration! It's only 2 pages of praise. 1 page of Benning bashing. And 20 pages of Marwood coddling.
If you're not going to get your facts straight, I can't even have a discussion with you!

Plan A was to be patient (Missed out on OEL). Plan B was to be patient (Missed out on Tanev). Plan C was to be patient (Missed out on Stecher). Plan D was to be patient (Missed out on Toffoli), Plan E was to overpay (missed out on Barrie) Plan F "holy fack this isn't working" Plan???? Got lucky.

It paid off. That is all.

Love the narrative switch over after this excellent trade. Big effort to try and make the patient fans look like the foolish ones after the absolutely silly panic and bashing going on the last couple of days.

Just own your fkn weakness.

They are pro's and he will. This is a good deal for you guys. He looks oddly like Macaulay Culkin in this interview...

Rubbish. Benning showed discipline and let those deals pass. They are not misses. I'll take Schmidt over Tanev any day.

Benning negotiated and walked when he didnt like the deals. A few days ago the usual fickle fans wanted this. It happened and all of a sudden the narrative switched. Now the narratives are switching again.

People just live to freak out.

I'm enjoying watching you now run and deflect from your posts the last couple of days. You are failing at painting the patient fans as the ones to be mocked after all that effort.

here's the thing: it doesn't have to be one way or the other. it can have elements of both.

example: petey was a homerun of a draft pick. an absolute winner! great job jb/scouting staff.

but it's also lucky that 4 teams didn't pick him.

that doesn't mean that it's all luck and jb didn't have any influence. it's just about looking at the complete picture.

the problem is that in this thread, the camps are so divided that anything that resembles context is labeled "hate," and anything positive is "slurping."

- RealityChecker

I liked the trade.
I'm glad the Canucks didn't sign the contracts that Markstrom & Tanev got. I wasn't a huge fan of the Toffoli trade as I didn't think they had a good chance of retaining him knowing the cap challenges. The Holtby signing was decent and I had a good nights sleep after Troy from Richmond signed in Detroit. My opinion of Benning has not changed.

Barrie? and at a premium?? Tanev & Stecher were gone when JB circled back! He didn't "let those deals pass", it was actually quite the opposite

They "passed" on JB
