If you don't qualify your RFA's, they become UFA's.
See: Duclair, Anthony and Athanasiou, Andreas
I never said high value RFA's aren't signed until after a QO. I said doing what was literally necessary for Barzal not to turn into an unrestricted free agent is not even remotely close to being a sign that Lou was "out of options". It's boilerplate housekeeping that happens every single year.
This year happens to be one with a great deal of uncertainty around the financial situation of all teams, so I think it's quite a bit over-dramatic to act like Barzal not being signed by now is some sort of high-risk travesty. - eichiefs9
Do you think Ottawa needs a winger like Barzal? |

No I think they need an elite puck moving defenseman like Boychuk |

I am extra nervous. I can see this team unraveling because of cap mismanagement. For 2 years I've been waiting for magic Lou to seriously address these bad contracts, and he never did. This year is bad, next year may be worse.
Question: What if Barzal had opted for arbitration?

Barzal is one of the worst top line centers in the league. Let him center the 3rd line while he learns how to play to his line mates strengths. I can count on one hand the number of pucks he has put on Lee's stick for a deflection goal, which used to be Lees big strength. Puckin Barzy keeps trying to turn him into a pretty play shooter. Eberle does his best work just above the paint, when he gets the puck.
The league has caught up to Barzals skate-capades routine, and he hasn't come up with a solution beyond turning the puck over in the O-zone.
Touting Barzal as a top center is puckin insane. Give me a break. |

This is what happens when you overpay bottom 6 talent. You can never trade those deals. - RogerRoeper
It's better to over over pay your top 6 like the Leafs? Shut the frontdoor |

Err....Barzal realizes he's worth more, and can get a bunch of his salary in signing bonus. No need to wave the offer sheet as leverage. Instead of dealing with what he can get him for, Lou has to deal with how much can he get him to walk away from. Barzal and his agent HAVE to be aware of covid, and signing bonus will be a big factor for them.
Sweet jesus, the dangers of letting a high talent, young player make the rounds is pretty damn obvious. But that boat has sailed. Risky play by Lou. Giving the 3 low end qualifying offers meant Lou was out of options. Something he did to himself by making some bad signings early on, then over estimating the Isles chances of winning this year. - Puckin_Island

If he’s so terrible compared to the rest of the leagues centers then why the hell are you literally crapping your pants on this thread that he’s going to leave in some panic ridden, hypothetical, bull crap situation?
You are an absolute moron |

Answer: Lou Lamoriello would have reminded him that he wasn't arbitration eligible and he probably would've fired his agent for not knowing that beforehand |

He doesn’t care if Barzal the Center leaves it’s Barzal the wing he’s concerned about losing. Ross Johnson Barzal’s Center would be upset as well. |

He's a great PLAYER. Some day, he'll be as good a center as you guys think he is now. There's no question Nelson should be the first line center. That isn't even debatable. |
