Leafs paid a 1st to move Marleau and he only had one year left on his contract. TJ has 4 years left.

Correct. And they wouldn't have been in that position if they had played Nylander 10 NHL games rather than 18 (burning his final entry level year, on the season they tanked and won the lottery). Cut to, they inked him to a massive extension which could have waited a year if they just sent him to the AHL for 9 meaningless games.
Instead they traded Marleau out at the cost of a 1st, overpaid for Nylander who's pay would not have gone up given his prodution, and here we are. Leafs fans should be psyched to see Thorts in their locker room now. They need his leadership badly.
