According to Ek, Hoffman is expected to sign a 1 year deal. I know he's not the best and the comparisons to Stone are not valid, but I think someone is going to get a really good player for a year. I wish the Hawks were in position to take advantage. |

Yes, really. Someone who makes $1M will pay $50,000 in taxes. Someone who makes $100,000 will pay $5,000. (5% tax rate). $50,000 is more than $5,000. - mohel
That is my argument to people too. The more you make the more you pay. Or is there something that I am missing.

Nolan Patrick's injury has a lot to do with this low number:
@PuckPedia
The #Flyers 22 y/o C Nolan Patrick (Drafted #2 '17) has accepted his Qualifying Offer of 1 year $874,125 (105% of previous $832.5K base salary) |

Everyone paying 5% accomplishes exactly that. - mohel
5% of $40k hurts a lot more than 5% of $500k. The theory is correct when you consider a bank will make a higher percentage of income mortgage on $500k income than $40k income because most expenses are not variable. |

Wouldn't the hurt of the 5% tax on a 40k earner be the same to him/her whether a 500k earner was taxed at 5% or 7% or 10% ? |

No worries! I still learned a lot from y'all. Taxes are not my strong suit. - Theo Fox
Theo do you think the hawks are done signing players or trade acquisitions? I m little surprised that Strome has not been signed yet wonder if they are shopping him. I know he does not have much leverage as far negotiating a new contract.
Imo what is the next move by bowman if there is one? |

No, there's an overflow of forwards and defensemen right now so there's likely at least movement to ship some out.
In today's article in the Athletic, there is speculation that it's just a matter of when rather than if Strome is re-signed.
There's really no rush to re-sign him unless it holds up other transactions that need to be made. |

From the Athletic this morning...
There seems to be just one piece of business left for the Blackhawks, and that, of course, is Dylan Strome’s next contract.
So, what’s the holdup?
Well, it doesn’t sound like anyone is in a hurry to get it done yet.
One source indicated Thursday that it might not happen for some time. With Strome not having arbitration rights, there isn’t a rush for either party to get the deal done. The Blackhawks wanted to square everything else away this offseason before focusing on Strome.
It sounds as if the Blackhawks and Strome expect to get a contract done. It’s just a matter of when. There hasn’t been much discussion yet, the source said.
Time could benefit both sides in a way. They might have a better sense of where to place the contract. It’s likely the Blackhawks and Strome work on a short-term deal. Evolving-Hockey projected a two-year, $3.3 million contract, and that’s probably about right in normal times. But with the cap staying flat for the foreseeable future, the Blackhawks will probably look for Strome to take less. Strome may just ask for a one-year deal and want to get back to the negotiating table after next season, when he has arbitration rights.
If Strome keeps up his production, he’ll have a strong case come next year. He’s so far produced 89 points in 116 games since joining the Blackhawks. Only Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Alex DeBrincat have produced more points for the Blackhawks over the last two seasons. |

Hey Scott, Like Theo mentioned, it will get done in time (I'm personally hoping a sign and trade).
I'm thinking they more at least one more D-man as well. |

Actually the problem is like i believe California is doing right now is they want to raise the tax rate again. - BetweenTheDots California tax is 10.5%, for those making over a million 13.3% with a proposal to raise that to 16%

I wonder if they are waiting to see Smith's situation, if he's LTIR they have up to the last day to sign someone to equal the cap to replace someone on LTIR and then above and beyond to equal the injured players salary, something like that |

Problem is you have way way way way more people making 40k then 500k. I don't like this plan but mathematically it makes sense.
And mathematically speaking it takes over 12 people making $40k just to get to 500k, and i know in Illinois they are not handing out those kinds of salaries |

The more I see this market play out for free agents, and teams like TBY with no apparent dance partners to get under the cap, the more I’m OK with the Maatta and Saad trades and the fact that Stan hasn’t made any big $/term signings.
The NHL financial environment is tanking hard and player contracts appear to be on a course for a “market correction.” |

Yes but there’s always outliers, see Pietrangelo’s signing with Vegas, the big dogs will still get paid. |

That is already addressed in the current illinois tax code to some extent. Exemptions, deductions and credits have a much larger affect on the illinois tax rate that lower income earners wind up paying. So a family of 4 earning 50K is really only paying about 4% taking into account standard exemptions. The more you make , over 50k, the closer you get to the current 4.95% rate. If you make less than 50K, your effective tax rate drops lower than 4%.

Still confused about how that works. Wondering if this is a possible scenario:
Day 1 of season: Blackhawks are up to the cap including Smith's salary. Strome not signed.
Day 2 of season: Smith goes on LTIR. Strome ends his "holdout" and signs. LTIR credit for Smith keeps Blackhawks under cap.
Is that a loophole that can be used? |

Hawks have plenty of cap space to sign Strome without worrying about Smith and when he goes on LTIR. They have over 5m and 20 spots filled. Some juggling and they have a full roster and some cap space left over. |
