Nate Schmidt's positive attitude and boundless enthusiasm charmed Vancouver fans and media during his introductory press availability, and there's talk that the Utica Comets may have to relocate north of the border for the 2020-21 AHL season.

Just wondering about the viability of running a 7-team AHL loop with no attendance. Seems like an awful lot of red ink.

Perhaps they could find economies of scale by linking the AHL and NHL teams for travel, but of course that would increase the risk of contracting COVID-19.

I'm wondering if they will simply scrap the AHL season and allow teams to run a taxi squad that wouldn't count against the cap - similar to the bubble rosters.

Read someone's reply on The Athletic (so take with a massive grain of salt) that Schmidt and Vegas had a pretty good understanding when he signed his deal he was going to be there for the whole thing – but they didn't want to give him a full NTC. So, complete speculation was that they wanted to do right by him and keep a good standing with players, so they dealt him to a team they knew he'd be interested in.

Doubt it, but possible.

edit: also reminds me when Cody Hodgson was dealt for Kassian. Some teams were pissed as they didn't even know he was on the block – felt the same that they could have offered more.

VGK needed to have this in place prior to signing Petro.
