Listening to Emrick makes me want to call the suicide hotline.
I honestly think there is a case to be made that the game took longer to pick up in the U.S due to having to listen to him, along with all of the absolutely brutal regional coverages of most U.S. based teams.
Gord Miller is my personal favourite - Pegullaville
It will never happen because they make way too much money doing their normal sports and probably have no interest, but they need to figure out a way to get the top broadcasters into the sport. Guys like Kevin Harlan, Ian Eagle, Gus Johnson, etc. The closest thing NBC has to that is Kenny Albert. |

I think it's a by-product of his age and probably a reason he's retiring. - buffalofan19
Ive thought RJ has been shot for some time now and its really apparent when you listen to old calls of his.
Maybe its the same with emrick? My only exposure to him is on the national broadcasts. I respect his knowledge of the game but never liked him even going back to his start on NBC

This will happen at some point during the first 10 games. I wonder if I can place a bet on it at the casino.

He called a number of national broadcasts on ESPN/ABC before the 2005 lockout as well, including the Sabres' 8-0 massacre of Philadelphia back in 2001.

The first highlight.. babbling thru the faceoff and play on the halfwall to suddenly yell "shot score!"
edit: sure is a fun highlight to watch |

No offence taken.
I also enjoy Cuthbert and Hughson.
Emrick must have been doing something right all of these years to gain such a large following, just doesn’t do it for me.

Never was a big fan of Emrick, but didn’t really mind him. Part of the problem, imo, is NBC aiming for casual fans and new fans. They spend a lot of time explaining very basic aspects. The last few years he was starting to bother me more and more, though, far too often rambling off into sidebars unrelated to the night’s game.
It takes him an annoying 15 seconds to say a shot hit the post... |

My favorite Hughson-ism, when the home crowd gets loud because of a perceived missed call: "Fans call a penalty, the referees don't".

That was always my bone of contention with him.
Hockey has always been a niche sport. Most of the fans watching his broadcasts are not of the casual variety. And he was always too concerned with every player's back story or of some stupid detail that literally no one cares about, but that he thought made the player more interesting than they really were.
No. One. Cares. Mike. Shut up and call the play, because that was the 12th scoring chance that you missed while talking about Paul Bissonette's (frank)ing hardware store back in Flin Flon!
It's insulting to the fans. |

😂😂😂
And McGuire just piggybacked all over that, but usually with the "Oh, look at me! I'm so smart!" comment that Niklas Kronwall played for Djurgårdens, in the SEL.
No wonder why no one will hire you as GM.

Oh my God, this.
I'd love to know if they ever did focus groups - I'd imagine that even first time hockey watchers found it patronizing.
And FFS, quit calling it ice hockey!!! |

You'd be holding Hutton's 1.3 + Martinez's 4 + Fleury's 7, minus Okposo's 6, comes out to be +6.3M. Sabres have about 13.6 left in space. Add on the overage bonus from last year, gives you about 12.1 left. Take out the 6.3 you just added, now you have 5.8M left. Now you need to sign Reinhart, Olofsson and Ullmark. Reinhart 6.2, Olofsson 3.9, Ullmark 2.2, comes out to 12.3M. You have -6.5M in cap space. Now you need to trade Risto and Miller for picks and prospects. - TheSabresTaco
Yea, when I suggested it I assumed we would be moving a RD ( if we bring in Martinez). I think it would tighten things this year but give way more flexibility next two years with Dahlin and joker to sign. Give Reinhart one year and see how he plays on 2nd line. If Hall wants to stay after this year trade Reinhart. |

So is cold rain good for us tonight, or bad for us tonight?
I'm guessing it's good - maybe help out the defence a little. |

but how will I know if it is played on ice or not?
It's kind of like my pet peeve when in football Gruden would say "now that guy is a football player"
Thanks John, appreciate the insight. |
