If his doctors clear him, and the team doctors can't find anything wrong with him, I don't think they'll be able to LTIR him. The league might agree with them, but the NHLPA would go pretty crazy I assume. - NewYorkNuck
Then you are assuming that a team that wants to "Malhotra" a player like Ferland won't have their team doctors opine that the multiple concussions make it to dangerous to return. Easy prognosis to state at this point more data is required over time. A valid position to take when the hard science in this grey matter area is not definitive like a broken bone.
Also, where was the NHLPA when Malhotra disagreed with Canucks and wanted to play and later did so with another team. This was done before and can be done again. It just takes the will to do it.
Though in Ferland's case the Canucks may want to avoid footing the bill if his last stint was uninsured. Thus wait to have him under insurance again if possible before going down the LTIR route. |

I agree on Ferland. They could easily go to the league and show his history with concussions and LTIR him now for his own good. 3 in one season is alot, with each pretty much happening within a couple days of returning to play. - Retinalz
Didn’t he report his last injury was neck related and by not being correctly diagnosed it prolonged his treatment? |

Sorry Hank, the $6,000,000.00 was a previous discussion of $6MM, or Just spelling it out, I spelt it out.
You’re pretty good at deciphering riddles and incoherent posts, were is NuckUp getting $9.5MM if Eriksson and Ferland are playing on the Comets as opposed to the Canucks. - Makita
Ah, yes, 6000.000 dollars. Maybe JB is just going to write funky numbers like that and funnel the 9.5.00,000.0 dollars around through some crafty paperwork. |

You don't understand the CBA or other things.
Sorry, I know I just said I'd assume you agree with me but I can tell that you just don't get it.
The Canucks can't magically make LE and Ferland go on LTIR, waiving them only frees up 1m each, not 9.5m.
Manny almost lost an eye.... what happened to LE? - Pres.cup
huh?!? Is separating concepts something you are failing to comprehend? Anyway. teams have control of roster decisions. LTIR and waivers are tools they use in the NHL. Nothing new here. Question only is how and when can this go down.

LOL you know the point was they wouldn't be playing. There are steps to the process of removing their cap hits. It doesn't happen in one move. |

Can we circle back;
Eriksson has a $6m cap hit, Benning’s only control over that is if Eriksson agrees to terminate his contract, please explain how this gives control over anything other than saving 1m in Utica.
Ferland at $3.5, has stated he will be healthy for training camp, “Maholtra” all you wish, if the player is healthy he can be waived, traded, but cannot be arbitrarily placed on LTIR. The NHL would laugh at this suggestion and fine the club for violation the cap rules.
Benning (in my opinion) has absolutely no control over these contracts other than listed above. |

Never considered that, AHS, Aquilini Hit Squad, 🤦
Benning could have control, Loui you either take a MTA or the AHS options. |

This started with the point that the Canucks have more control in dealing with these 2 players then getting cap relief trades done. It was pointed at a couple more times when the assumption ended in but what if the players challenge.
Facts you are leaving out. 1) Ferland could not be bought out because he was an injured player. 2) the extent of the injury is not known but he has not played more then a couple games in a row retreating 3 times within 1 year.
Now for the speculation. Ferland's not on LTIR now maybe because of insurance issues. Ferland can say he's healthy just like Malhotra did but the team can deem him not fit to play. His injury is a grey matter, pun intended again, that medical prognosis can back the team position up. Its an impairment like impaired vision (you know other players have played with one eye or impaired visually because the teams wanted them to play). Its an excuse that had the Canucks keep Malhotra from playing. They did this before the new season to save cap. This was after Manny had come back to play in the preceding playoffs. This option actually is more in JB's control with past precedent.
Now for LE. There needs to be an AHL season. Then the Canucks have leverage. What is under control is they can have a discussion like with Bagosian and he agrees to leaving. LE might think hey the Stars were close and I can play at home on a show me. Who knows its just more preferable to being somewhere you are not wanted. There is also the Luongo treatment to get $$/role for retiring.
None of these outcomes are guaranteed. Just more controllable then trying to make cap dump trades, with all the variables involved there, in the new flat cap NHL. |

I was over on TSN and (frank) is what is Toronto doing? They signed Thornton and Bogosian while they still have Spezza on the roster. That is some slow dudes with their best before date well past. |

Well, TMLs haven't exactly had much success past the regular season with who they got, so, having a few vets on the lineup is not a bad thing imo.
But i agree that Spezza and Jumbo Joe seems a tad redundant.
I'm good with that Bogosian signing too tbh.
I wonder if in retrospect, they wouldn't have signed Spezza if they had Thornton already locked up? |

Perhaps even more laughable is that Joe Thornton is on the record saying he's trying to win a cup, and that's why he signed with the Leafs.

Sportsnet too in the offseason revival of Hogtown's Cup contending Maplelaughs. Imagine if there is a Canadian division next season and Canucks knock them out once again |

Yeah wow you are so smart you know that Malhotra wasn't forced off the Canucks. They used the excuse it wasn't safe for him to play to move cap off even though he wanted to play and can, if needed, do the same with Ferland. - NuckUp
LTIR
The CBA identifies the team doctors as being the arbiters of fitness to play. If the player disagrees, they can request an adjudication by an independent panel. In either case, it is a medical opinion about fitness, not the preference of either the team or player that determines whether the player goes on LTIR.
So the team can initiative a review, but the medical staff make the determination.
WAIVERS
Placing a player on waivers is at the discretion of the team. Once waived, the player can be assigned to a minor league affiliate, with a fractional cap savings of approximately $1M in the case of either Ferland (who wouldn’t be waived if fit to play), or Loui (who may choose to report, or not). Only if the player chooses to NOT report may the team proceed with an filing for termination, or the player may request a mutual termination (exceedingly rare). |

With very little chance of an AHL season, Loui has zero reason not to report, as he will get paid for staying home. |
