I have to ask, only because of the Hawks notice... lets say Toews goes public with a trade demand stating he doesnt want to be part of a rebuild (similar to the Messier trade, its all too familiar to what EDM did and what transpired in 91). What are the odds, and what do you think it will take to acquire someone like him? Just like Messier, his experience being one of the best in the league and a 3 time cup champion, would make him the immediate leader and captain of the team.

Thoughts?

yeah, somebody brought this up to me on twitter, it's a real hard fit

if they took back Strome and ate like 2-3 million of the cap they could probably make it work this season

but I dont know, really kind of hard to see that happening

Do you not agree?

I like Toews, always have. I think he makes our top 6 as good as any in the league. Also has the Panarin tie.

So right now my armchair has them eating 3mil. Going their way would be Chytil, Buch, Rykov, a 1st and a 2nd pick.

Not worth it, and I've been a HUGE Toews fan since before he entered the league. Too much salary at too much term, with too much going back for a man headed toward his twilight years.

and even if we acquired him, and Blackhawks held 3 million of the cap, it's 3 years, and Mika comes up in two years

I dont wanna be in a position where we gotta think about buying last year of Toews out so we can afford Mika's extension

I actually wish Toews was two years left

Is it really? Buch looks like the odd man out on RW. Weve traded Chytil 1000 times now, whats another trade but this time for Toews? Obviously theyll want picks, and we can afford to give one up after our recent lottery luck, it would be top 5 protected. And we can afford to toss in one of our top D prospects since we have so many.

It puts the Rangers in the cup conversation almost immediately, for the next 4-5 years.

The hope here is that by that time the cap will go up.

Agreed. I don't think it will come to fruition anyway. This quote by Stan Bowman does not sound like someone who is interested in retaining salary on any players he trades, especially players signed for another 3 years.

"I want the flexibility so we can bring in a good player in his mid-20s, who is signed but makes too much money for that team," Bowman said. "We can swoop in and say, 'We can take him off your hands for relatively nothing.' We're not really in that mode yet, but that's the motivation for working on our cap differently. It's not because Rocky [Wirtz, the Blackhawks' owner] doesn't want to spend money. We've been one end of the transaction, where we are offloading good players, getting little in return. I'd love to take advantage of other teams. That will accelerate our progress to become a top team again."

That quote there means theyre gonna be the a55holes who are going to offer sheet people, and will be sharks in the water looking for vulnerable prey in a cap screwed situation.

So its not so much a rebuild as a, watch out.

I think we are hoping that anyway

yeah, I dont know, I mean, if we ended up with Toews somehow I am not going to say I wouldnt get revved up

it's just hard to see the whole thing fitting at the moment

and of course Panarin-Toews-Kakko Lafreniere-Zibinajed-Kreider would be a crazy top 6

just getting there seems little impossible to me at the moment

Nope. Stanley Cup Bowman ain't doin' any retaining. He's got to reset the team to take advantage of all their young prospects, of which they have a bunch.

The guy to get is Kane. I don't care about the 2C thing. Kane is still playing out of his mind great hockey. Get that guy and they'll lead the league in scoring next year. Guaranteed!

how do you get Kane without sending Lafreniere though, it's not realistic to think otherwise

Only way to get there is to trade Trouba (plus ....). There's no other way.

The thing is that while he is a stud in terms of leadership and work ethic and faceoffs, Toews is not a sure thing to put up numbers. He was the topic of discussion as to whether he was overrated 6, 7 years ago. My vote at the time was no, he was not. But, this is a different matter now. And 5 assets is too much to give up for basically anyone, IMO. That is not how you keep your line up strong and balanced.
I think we are in too good a place to upset the roster that much for any one player.

I agree but you can't be those bullies that offer sheet someone like a Cirelli or Barzal if you are paying Toews $3M+ to play for another team. I think if Toews gets traded it's more likely to someone like Columbus or Detroit who could take on the whole salary. Maybe Boston takes a run at him with Krejci's contract expiring after this season.

Not even close. They can definitely make an offer without Laf. Like I just said though, Trouba would have to go and that's not going to happen. Trouba, Buch, Miller, Krav, and a 1st is a pretty rich package. Would you make that trade? Or said differently, at what point are you uncomfortable with the trade? That's probably when you hit fair value.

And just to be clear, I'm just spitballing like we're at the bar. Not trying to get into a contentious back and forth here. Speaking of which, it's 5:00 if you round up!

Right. I wasn't clear but I agree with you. Trouba would have to be part of any trade that brought back salary and that can't happen (unless his wife is like, hey honey... um... Chicago has this great hospital in Hyde Park.....).

I can't even fathom a scenario where the Rangers have Panarin, Lafreniere, Kane and Kreider as left wingers

Yeah, I get that. But would it matter if we won the cup?

The way I see it is we get a really, really good 2C who has chemistry with Panarin, would be a great locker room guy (especially for our young players) and points to the team trying to take the next step.

Kravs has a ton of potential and I'm one of his biggest fans, but I'd be willing to move him in the right trade.

A top D prospect would be tough to move, but we're so deep on the blueline that I could get over it. I would not trade Nils, Miller or Schneider. Top d prospect in this case would be a guy like Robertson or Tarmo or Rykov.

This is the kind of upgrade I could stomach trading away prospects.

Ha! Kane is a RW. Problem solved!

When he and Panarin were on the same line in 2016, it was amazing to watch.. and Anisimov was the center. Unreal!
