Reinhart was a beast for the Kunlun Red Star though. 2 assists in 33gp. WORKHORSE.

Right this second, no. Lets give him some decent wingers, see how he does this season and go from there. Do I think he could be, sure. He has the skill.
- mdw7413

This is why Im willing to see what hes got this year, if he still plays soft, inconsistent and isnt elevating the play with (at minimum) LAF/Kreider, Kakko/Kravtsov/Gauthier on his wings, then we know what we got.

Heres my question, why does he need “decent” wingers? He had a rotation of Kakko, Fast and Gauthier on RW, all decent players. As a center he should be able to elevate the play of the people around him, even if its marginal.

Heres what happens:
Strome has 60pts with Panarin and they say thats Panarin making Strome look good.
Chytil has 60pts with Panarin and they say “HA! I told you so!”. This is the real Chytil.

I don't know what to tell you. You already decided a kid who just turned 21 and has split time between here and the Pack and has not had a set line is not very good.

That may be the case. Call me crazy but I would like to give him a little more time. Maybe a line that stays together for more than 2 games and has some veteran presence could help a 21 year old out.

Not sure how many times this needs to be said, he may be decent as a winger, I just dont think hes a center, thats it.

Let him play with Kreider and Gauthier. Many people think Gauthier has top 6 skill, lets see.

two wings who cant score LOL

just playing though - would like to see this happen. that's a big, fast line who would be tough to play against

Kreider/Gauthier would be a start.

I'm just saying, lets give the kid a full year with a set line and have a tad bit of patience. I may be wrong, but no way I'm giving up on him. He easily could work on the problems he has. Most players do, and I'm sure Quinn sees his deficiencies.

Well, being tough to play against is, I believe, one of the most important roles of a 3rd line. Frustrating opponents creates scoring chances. It could work or not but its a start.

of course - and JD talked about that after the playoffs and in my opinion they've done nothing to address "being difficult to play against"

I think you make the point. It's not that he is not developing, it's that they already have an abundance of what he is. Soft, and not difficult to play against. That has to improve for Buch and Kakko as well. They might be able to get away with it, if the bottom 6 were more gritty and could pound on the forecheck. Right now I don't see it.

well I do the point that was made earlier is a good one, the Islanders have made good decisions on players and bailed out on mistakes quickly and made a couple of great decisions

like pulling the plug on Griffin Reinhart so quickly, that was a genius move, we would have all been you have to have more patience with a young guy we used the 4th overall pick on

Isles were like BOOM, this guy doesn't have it, lets get Barzal for him

On the other hand, Rangers waited too long to pull the plug on Lias Andersson

- jimbro83

Griffin Reinhart was traded 3 years after his draft year (drafted in 2012, traded in 2015). We are currently 3 years after Chytil's draft year so it's a fair comparison there. The difference is that when Reinhart was traded, he had spent the first 2 years after getting drafted playing in the WHL, with each year being a decline from the year before, and the third year he played 8 games with the Islanders and the rest in Bridgeport.

Chytil has played more NHL games than all but 3 people in his draft class (Hischier, Heiskanen and Patrick). This obviously does not make him the 4th best player in his class, but there's something to be said about the youngest player in the draft class having played 144 games in the 3 years since he was drafted.

This isn't directed at you because I don't believe you are pushing this, but it's important to put into context our expectations. Look at Zib's first 3 years after being drafted. In his first year he played his 9 games with Ottawa and was then sent back to Sweden. The next year he split time between OTT and Binghamton. His 3rd year he dealt with some injuries and played 42 games with Ottawa. It took them another 3 years to give up on him, and they now regret it terribly.

Not only would trading Chytil be giving up on him too early, but he would be giving up an incredibly valuable asset to us this year which is a Top 9 player making less than $900k. If we want to discuss moving him next offseason when he is due a new contract, then I'm all for discussing it but it's ludicrous to think about it today.

It depends on the return. Which Ive always suggested has to be a top 6 C.

I don't think Chytil, not alone anyway, is landing you a true top-6 center

That's exactly what Ottawa did with Zib. They traded Zib and a 2nd to upgrade their 2C position by bringing in Brassard. Nobody is giving us a proven young 2C for Chytil unless we throw in significant assets which I think is foolish before we see what Chytil is. Cirelli keeps getting brought up. I like Cirelli and agree at this point that he is better than Chytil, but he is 2 years older and will cost significantly more in dollar terms. Let's also keep in mind that he had 1 more even strength goal than Chytil this year, and only 2 more total, in 8 more games. Most of his points came from assists, where he had 19 more than Chytil.

Chytil's most common linemates last year were Howden, who is almost universally disliked by Ranger fans, and Kakko, who everyone admits had a tough season as an 18 year old. Cirelli's most common linemates were Killorn and Stamkos. Obviously he was going to have more points.

Cirelli also had Selke votes which is important and impressive, but you could make an argument that on a team with as much fire power as Tampa, he could afford to focus more on the defensive side of the game.

All else equal, yes I prefer Cirelli, but when you look at the cost to get him, I don't think its worth giving up an unprotected 1st after the lottery luck we've had in the past 2 years, along with the fact that this season may not even happen, which would put us directly back into the lottery next season.

if we trade our 2021 first, it's gotta be top 3 protected and I think it would be

not entire lottery protected, top 3 though

Purely hypothetical, because I'm curious what some of you would do:

If Tampa offered you Cirelli for Kakko straight up...do you do it?
