NHLe is NHL equivalency is a calculation of how a player’s point production in their given league would translate to the NHL (over an 82 game pace). This is useful for forwards and then d-men that are meant to be two-way top 4 or star producers, like hopefully Boqvist will be. It also calculates probability of being a NHL regular based on improvement over time in the development years.
There isn't a standardization of stats at all league levels (there are for many with tracking project now but not all) that can be used for the defense side of things, unfortunately, so at least statistically we're looking at these a bit one-dimensionally. The rest we have to observe ourselves and use the stats that are accessible at the NHL level (of which there are many).
Here's straight from HockeyProspecting for more info:
- Includes every skater, drafted in the first seven rounds, from 1990 to Present as well as select undrafted stars and 1980s drafted Hall of Famers.
- It includes over 300 eligible draftees for the 2020 draft.
- In total, the tool includes over 5,000 players
- NHLes are used as a way to standardize player’s offensive score over time. We’re looking for higher numbers at younger ages. Those are the biggest indicators of future star-potential and becoming an NHLer, in general.
- The tool provides the players’ probability of turning into an NHLer (200+ games) and probability of turning into an offensive star in the NHL (0.7+ career ppg for a forward and 0.45+ career ppg for a defenseman). - L_B_R

I don't agree. I think if a GM knows he is weak in an area, say contract negotiations, he will hire someone who is stronger in that area. If you know the game, you know what kind of players are needed to be successful. A good scouting staff helps with that. - powerenforcer
I'd agree with this, too, as far as each person on a team has core competencies. If you don't possess that competency, hire someone who does.
That may get tougher in these financially tight times. You just hope the competencies you need are collectively possessed by everyone you are able to afford on payroll. |

They're great offensively and decent defensively.
Imo the Pens 2016, Caps, and Blues all showed that a team can win with 1 really good d-man (either highly offensively like Carlson or more well-rounded like Pietrangelo) but that you just need 3 good top 4 guys and bottom pairs that won't hurt you. As long as the forward group and/or goalie make up for the defense, anyway. For the Pens and Caps, the forwards made up for it with offense and Blues with defensive.
Of course, then the Pens in 2017 showed you can win with a random assortment of dudes on defense.
Tampa is the first truly balanced team imo since the Hawks in 2015 from forwards to defense. On D though, similar #1 performances, not quite as good top 4 but better depth obvs. |

Letang, Carlsson? - Chunk
Tbf Letang didn't play at all in the second cup. Dumoulin was their #1 that run and 37 yo Hainsey was a very close 2nd. |

Dumoulin so underrated, so good. - BetweenTheDots
He is underrated but he's was def not 1D quality in 2017 (he's still not but solid 2/3D). The depth at forward for that Pens team helped keep that defense group from sinking and also Flower/Murray splitting the net. It's like how the forward group for the Hawks in 2015 helped so that the defense ran with 4 d-men (great but still just 4) for the most part plus Crow being strong in net. |

I understand but I'm fond of players who can just make life very difficult for excellent forwards and he does just that. He does all the little things very very very well.

I think his NZ play needs work but that might be system related since none of the Pens d-men are particularly good at NZ defensive work. He is good in the DZ. |

Its going to be very interesting to see how well Claude Julien's Montreal team plays this coming season. He has 8 NHL Dmen of varying ages and abilities, a world class goalie when he is rested and healthy and an excellent backup, albeit expensive. That's a pretty good start on a playoff spot. |

Coincidence that Doc retired today, and this news tomorrow??
Methinks that's a big Coincidence
(even though Rava from Seinfeld would tell you there are no big ones, just coincidences) - vabeachbear
Believe Zawaski mentioned that Doc was being interviewed by a local Chicago outlet today. Seems an odd choice of an interview to grant just after your retirement makes the news. You may be onto something here. |

Barstool Chief, who has broken Hawks news in the past, posted a cryptic tweet saying that there will be major Hawks news that will be shared this week.
Not sure what it is, but I’ve got an inkling that it has to do with the vacant presidency. - TommyHawk
So everyone ready for a team without Kane, Toews and Keith? The core is going bye bye. |

Sweet! Thanks LBR. I hope he gets more comfortable playing his game soon. I'm guessing year 3 is when we start to see what he is really made of. - Chunk
I hope so. His first NHL goal was awesome. Upper corner from the point. He had a knack for getting his shot through in the first handful of games, then I dont remember him looking confident |
