Best Wishes to Doc...I always enjoyed his work. He may be the last public figure to openly admit he was a Pirates fan... "Big Drive......Score!"

I hope we NEVER EVER EVER EVER get to hear Gary Thorne call another game. I couldnt disagree more strongly with RW on this one. What an awful experience that would be.... He was so far behind most plays, overly dramatic, and extremely biased--especially if it involved the Rangers...
I can remember a game with the Pens where the Pens threw everything and the kitchen sink at Richter--hitting the post twice within 4 seconds, and Gary's call was "save Richter. Save Richter. What a Save by Richter!" Less than 30 seconds later, play went the other way and Messier was robbed by Ken Wregget....Thorne's call: "Messier shoots it wide". He would get really excited when one team scored and not as excited if the other scored... I hated having to listen to him call games.... Compare to Doc, and you really couldnt say he was rooting for one team over another....
Hopefully NBC makes a great choice...one that is NOT Gary Thorne

I've seen people on here swear he's a Caps homer. Never got the sense of that. Doc always struck me like he was just really excited for and cheering for good hockey, regardless of who was playing.

hahah I dont really hate anyone. I dont even dislike Doc per say, just think he's been a tad bit overrated and at times annoying...but when I reflect on why he was annoying I think it was when he usually enthusiastically called a goal against the Pens haha

Ive been on the Doc Loves the Caps train for a long time. You could feel it every time the Pens and Caps squared off.

The chronically complaining crowd sees announcer bias everywhere. They are funny that way. Read enough posts and you will find claims that every national announcer in every sport is biased for and against every team.

RW still finds a way to complain about something in a blog lol. It's actually impressive at this point.

Yeah, I always got the impression that Doc was very unbiased, which is not easy to be.

Now with the others bias is another story. Milbury is (obviously) biased toward the Bruins and Keith Jones toward the Flyers and Capitals. However, both are usually pretty good at hiding their biases. Milbury wasn't when the Pens won the Cup in 2016, as he looked like he was going to break down in tears .

The most biased is Eddie O. He is a huge Blackhawks homer and he is always biased against the Pens for some reason, although he seems to have become more neutral regarding the Pens recently. I can't stand the Bruins but I have to say that Eddie O was very biased toward the Blues/against the Bruins in the 2019 Cup Finals, I suspect because he didn't want the Bruins to pass up the Blackhawks again in Cup wins. He really needs to work on containing his bias more.

Many say that PeeAir is biased toward the Pens but as a Pens fan it is not easy for me to detect this. I think he just likes good, young kids . He may have been biased toward the Pens early in Crosby's career but isn't as much now that Crosby is older.

Well Edzo hates us because he coached here and his tenure didn’t end well. Rumor is that a young Sidney Crosby butted heads with him and that he still has bad blood towards Sid and the org because he felt the org ousted him on to appease an 18 year old kid.

Edzo definitely has issues with the Pens, I had the pleasure of meeting him with my son and he was really friendly until we asked him to sign a couple of Pens pucks. He asked, "So you're Pens fans huh?" My son responded something like "Big time" Edzo had very little to say after that... lol. He was very respectfully he whole time and a class act. Even posed for a pic with my kid...

He knows which side his muffin is buttered which is why he is a huge Hawks homer. I live in Chicago and Edzo does all the games. He does charity games with his kids in the Chicagoland area too.

Pure speculation on my end, but I think he is still upset about being fired into Crosby's rookie season. He was the Pens announcer for a while too

I can just imagine Edzo's reaction upon encountering a Pens fan in Chicago .

Yeah, he definitely seems like a good person and is certainly an expert and veteran of the game. He just has to get better at controlling his bias when doing national broadcasts .

As long as he is not doing a Pens nor Hawks game and he doesn't have a major axe to grind otherwise he is usually pretty good at color commentating. He also got his broadcasting career started in Pittsburgh like you said.

I appreciated his enthusiasm at times, other times it made me want to turn off the channel. He had major Caps bias the past 10/15 years and he never ever seemed to be that knowledgeable on the game often asking color commentators questions he should know the answers to.

This of course is all my opinion and I believe that there are far worse announcers out there than Doc.

- MattStrat

He knew the answers to those questions, he just gets everyone involved and starts conversation. He was good.
