I'm not suggesting it, I just think it is the cost. |

I guess a 1st is the price for getting rid of Loui. Tough pill to swallow, but it would put the team in a good position providing they don't sign Hoffman to a stupid deal. - VanHockeyGuy
Basically a 1st to get Hoffman..... Guy is a pretty consistent 25-35 goal scorer. Just watched all his goals from last year. He's got an unbelievable lethal shot. I think he would be an automatic 35 goals playing beside EP40.

I’m in the minority as I’ve been really pleased with the off-season moves so far. Brought in a stud dman and made the right calls letting their aging vets go. My only concern is adding sweetners to move out sh!t contracts. The team needs to be patient - CanuckDon
I too have been pleasantly surprised with Benning’s moves to date. Nothing crazy, accepted that he’s gonna have to be patient and let some questionable contracts expire...... |

Here's the key. Are we better now than last season? Is it okay to regress next season or maybe longer?

The effects of losing Tanev and Stecher won't really affect the D now that we have brought Schmidt in. Stecher's minutes can be rounded out hopefully by a deserving AHL guy like Rafferty.
Big question is can Holtby/Demko handle Marky's load. lol
Still say we move up a few more spots next season. |

Gillis couldn't build a core if his life depended on it. His success is directly linked to better GM's that built a solid core for him. Sure he added a couple minor pieces to that 2011 run(plus Erhoff, who was more than a minor piece), but the players we relied on to be that good were already in place. |

He'd literally be standing next to EP40 in the right faceoff circle because he scores most of his goals from that same spot on the PP.
We already have Tanner Pearson taking care of the empty netters.

Kneecap isn't as bad as tearing an ACL or MCL. It's just bone healing and phsyio.
The 13 month thing is an issue, but players in LA and Detroit whoever else didn't make the playoffs won't have played in 10 months at that point. Is there a huge difference in those months off? - NewYorkNuck
I don't even think he was skating in August training camp but I'm hearing he's close to getting his clearance for next season. The difference with LA and Detroit is their players didn't break their knee caps so they've been skating and practicing regularly - Leivo hasn't, any injury that keeps you off the ice for 8-9 months is immensely serious - so that's a huge difference.
I guess the point is I expect regression from Leivo, an unnecessary step back, so I'd rather see promotion from within - I don't see why guys like MacEwen, Hoglander, Hawryluk, Lind, can't step in and - maybe not immediately - but have a similar/better impact than Leivo. |

I agree. Patrick marleau had 1 year, 6.25 million aav left and had just scored 16 goals with Toronto when they traded a 1st to Carolina for him. It would cost way more than a 1st to ship 2 years at 6aav for for his 6 goals to another team imo |

The thing with Marleau that people erroneously leave out is that Carolina had to buy him out of the contract – that was part of him accepting that trade, so he could sign elsewhere. So that's a big chunk of money spent without actually getting an NHL body.
LE's 6 mil AAV is slightly different when it's only a 2.5 mil payout each year. Teams that aren't anywhere near the cap and are keeping a tight checkbook might care more about the dollar amount than cap hit.
Not saying getting rid of LE is easy, just that the Marleau comparable isn't straight across. |
