The effects of losing Tanev and Stecher won't really affect the D now that we have brought Schmidt in. Stecher's minutes can be rounded out hopefully by a deserving AHL guy like Rafferty.
Big question is can Holtby/Demko handle Marky's load. lol
Still say we move up a few more spots next season. - LordHumungous
Bold, Schmidt is going to help a lot but I think you are underselling Stetcher, overselling whoever our AHLer is.
I also think Hughes looks worse next to Myers compared to Tanev. As I assume Edler Schmidt will be our shutdown pair.
I agree that goaltending likely takes a hit. Luckily we've got an improved offense to overcome those deficiencies....

Lol, it’s my shtick, every time I read Benning bashing I will come with a rebuttal - Makita
Why wouldn’t you? I mean, JB’s built one of the most expensive and yet most useless bottom six in the entire NHL. To dismantle it he’ll need to throw away 1st round picks to do so.
That acumen must be defended at all costs. |

That’s your take bloated, I like Beagle and Roussel you don’t, tough titty
Motte is an excellent player for the expectations of his roll.
Eriksson is the only blemish on his fantastic tenure as the best GM in Canucks history.
Just be patient and send Eriksson to the Comets, no need to hyperbole over adding a 1st.. |

Why is he deserving?
Is it because he put up points, at a similar rate as Derrick Poulliot did in AHL last season and played a similar defensive game as him?
I would think more deserving AHL players would be Brisebois and Chatfield. |

The thing with Marleau that people erroneously leave out is that Carolina had to buy him out of the contract – that was part of him accepting that trade, so he could sign elsewhere. So that's a big chunk of money spent without actually getting an NHL body.
LE's 6 mil AAV is slightly different when it's only a 2.5 mil payout each year. Teams that aren't anywhere near the cap and are keeping a tight checkbook might care more about the dollar amount than cap hit.
Not saying getting rid of LE is easy, just that the Marleau comparable isn't straight across. - NewYorkNuck
Which team isn't near the cap floor?

Here's the key. Are we better now than last season? Is it okay to regress next season or maybe longer? - VanHockeyGuy
For me the obvious answer is no, we’re not, and yes, it’s fine to regress a bit given the young ages of the core players. |

It really does blow my mind that anyone can reduce defending to +/- and points. |

Caveat being that they were only really deployed together when down and pushing to score. I don't hate the idea of the pairing, I just think they'll give up more goals against. |

Ya, it's hard to tease apart. They put up really good numbers together, but they're mostly paired together in the final minutes of a game when they're down/the other team is defending more.
It'd be interesting to see a year of them together. |

Benning is responsible for bringing in Green and Stetcher, no? - belcherbd
That is true, and although I haven’t been a fan of either, I have complimented both this past season.
And also my personal view of either person’s capabilities doesn’t mean that I have to trash Benning, he used Stecher to the best of Stecher abilities and let him walk in the end.
He still likes Green, so far, so good enough for me. I would certainly like Gallant over Green, but it is what it is. |
