You are leaving the facts reported out. He said family reasons to JB as he reported to media. His newlywed wife wanted to be near family to get pregnant.
Yes there were development concerns for him as the same set of D mainly Guddy and Benn were still in favor at the time.
His situation was not black and white. You can respect and like other players but each has different circumstances. Bottom line now, he's willing to come and Canucks just need to find cap space.
Does he make Canucks better? Well that's certainly worth the low term cost signing to find out. - NuckUp
He also talked about he didn't like the coaches and city, and if it was more about his pregnant wife, what happens if they have another kid? He bolts again? I'm just saying, you need 100% buy-in if you want to build a Stanley Cup Winner, I can't fault a guy for prioritizing his family, but I also can't fault a NHL team for choosing to let go of a player like that. It's possible that maybe his lifestyle and personality is just better suited for him playing in his home country, and that's fine.
But when you sign a contract to play in the NHL, you need to realize the commitment that you're making, it usually involves moving your family and raising kids in the city you play in, moving away from your home city/country/family, playing in roles that may not be your first choice, accepting that you have to compete for playing time, etc.
If he's not ready to accept that, then he's probably not going to be a Canuck. |

Nonis wasnt very good at all. Even his good draft was only a month after Burke was let go. All the scouting that was done for that draft was while Burke was on the throne. Nonis even said so himself and said he just stayed the course. Sure he made the pics but he has to share the credit on that draft. - boonerbuck
So.... Benning can't take the blame for the JV pick? |

I'm trying to find out, but it's very confusing. Not sure about the 2-way cap hit being buried if it's over 1.075, but also not sure Tree can even sign a 2 way deal? He's already played in the NHL, so not sure he can sign an entry level deal? - NewYorkNuck
2-way deals have no restriction, you could have offered one to old man Joe Thornton(he would've laughed, but you could do it).
It's the AHL itself that limits the amount of "vets" a team can dress per night. |

He was a free agent (RFA) and made a choice he didn't bolt during his contract. That's how you're making it sound on commitment issue. He didn't trash city lol he just wasn't used to the all the pot in the air.
Anyway, that was then and this is now. He wants to come over and make it in the NHL. What's the issue with a show me deal? |

Lots of things are different in that situation. Benning can't say they stayed the course because he wasnt working in tandem with Gillis followed by being promoted. I dont ever remember Benning claiming he just went with the previous GM's list or anything.

You're arguing semantics. He left like 10 days after the regular season ended, he was technically under contract until July 1st lol.
And again, the rest of my post stands, he knows what he's signing up for. If he can't handle those commitments then I'd try to trade his rights and if no one wants them, then just let them expire and let someone else cater to him if they want. |

@Sportsnet650
.@FriedgeHNIC: Are the Canucks going to use a buyout? I think they know where Virtanen is going to be. It's not going to arbitration, both sides know what the deal is going to be. A second buyout window opens when that deal is done.
@FriedgeHNIC: Canucks will do things if they make sense. The Schmidt deal made a lot of sense. They took on money there.... If they were unwilling to do bigger things, Nate Schmidt would not be a Vancouver canucks.
JV deal is basically done, Canucks delaying to see if they can make a trade before buying out Sutter. |

Except any cap hit above 1.075M will still have whatever portion is above that count towards the cap so I'd say it does matter once you have a player making above that amount. If he makes 1.5M, then 425K will count towards the cap
We all know Tryamkin would probably bolt for the KHL if he gets sent down anyway so I guess that's a moot point in this case. - Nucker101

Pretty sure they have to go to arbitration, in order to get the 2nd buyout window.
They may have already agreed to some numbers, but Jake is being a good soldier to allow for the buyout window.
Benning offered 2.5 million, Jake want 2.55 million, now the arbitrator has to choose. |

I've read conflicting things, some people are saying that if they settle, they still get the 48 hour buyout window. Or like you said, they could play the system, go into arb with a handshake agreement and agree to basically ask for the same amount lol |
