Biller you work for the Flyers and try to spin everything into a positive light; I get as they pay your bills and probably pay you very well. So funny seeing you get all defensive.

All that writing you just did doesn't change the fact they haven't won poop since 1975 does it? What those other teams do is irrelevant. 3rd best record since 1975 lol, is that as relevant as winning the "State Championship" as well? Do you tell your buddies hey they have the 3rd best record since 1975?

The Pens own the flyers Bill so except it. 5-2. Repeat it 5-2

Excellent analysis, PT. Maybe login should read this. NVM. It won't help.

Thanks, LK.

When Bill wrote his stuff, I thought he was perhaps cherry-picking the longest gaps. This could be misleading, because teams often win in clusters and one team that won twice could have the same gap as a team that won 5 times, which would be misleading. But he was right in the larger picture as well.

Having said that, we should note this establishes us at about average. Nothing to get too excited above. No worse than the middle, but no better either.

TKOed how? Please elaborate. Bill comes off on that post a whiney grown man; deflecting his childhood teams lack of championships. None of what he said has any bearing on the fact the flyers haven't won poop since 1975; does it? In fact it was a fluff piece.

Focus on the flyers failures not what other teams have or have not done. I bet he still has his Bobby Clarke orange blade street hockey stick? 45 years and counting.

I simply showed you the bigger picture that every team goes through it at some point in their history. You are also clueless to the fact that winning the Cup takes a dose of good luck as well as good design.

But, honestly, sports are "what have you done for us lately? I get that. Would it matter at this point if the Flyers last Cup was in 1980, 1987 or 2010? No, it wouldn't. Ask the Phillies how many fans are still happy to live off the memories of 2008. Ask the Eagles how long ago the Super Bowl championship feels already.

By the time any team's last championship roster has no still-active players left in the league (much less the team), does it really matter if some other team with no still-active players won theirs a little more recently?

Not making excuses, not spinning anything. Actually, I am looking at the bigger picture of how team histories progress.

If you want guarantees, hockey isn't your sport. I suggest rooting for the Globetrotters instead.

You didn’t have to show me as I am well aware. Other teams are irrelevant as we are talking about the flyers. Globetrotters not a guarantee as Washington did beat them. Yep clueless bill. Yes it takes some luck who said it doesn’t? Guess flyers been just unlucky.

There have been years along the way since 1975 where they have been unlucky. Other years when they underachieved. Some where they were overamatched. It's not neat and tidy. Goes for the other teams as well.

Actually when you look at it they faced all dynasties in the cup finals they lost. Other teams were better is all. Nothing to hang your head at. 87 or 85 can’t Remember were very banged up and hell look at that oilers team.

I did the average analysis and somewhat to my surprise, I have to confess being TKoed as well.

I looked at the # of years a team has been in the league. I started the clock at 1968 because of the relevance to Flyers.

(I am probably off with the inception dates of some teams by a year or so. But it should not make a difference. Also, some teams may be lucky to win a cup quickly after entering league, but that should be evened out by others who have not been in the league long enough to win).

Altogether, 31 teams (before the Kraken) have been in the league for a total of 1249 "team years", during which there have been 52 cups awarded.

This makes for an average wait of 24 years. Flyers are right in the middle, with 2 cups in 52 years (average 26).

I think context is what is missing here. When the Cups are won is a huge factor.

Flyers fans who weren't born during either of the Cups what do those Cups mean to them? You can't stick your chest out for something that happened while you weren't breathing. If you do, join the Yankees 27 ringgggzzzz brigade.

I'd say probably 80-90% of the people who post in this forum either weren't born or aren't old enough to have appreciated seeing this franchise win.

Right now the only franchises with longer current Stanley Cup droughts are:

Buffalo, Toronto, Vancouver. That's it. 3 teams. If that isn't unacceptable to fans then perhaps they should take up bird watching or needlepoint.

All I’ll say is at least I’ve seen multiple playoff runs out of the Flyers. Can’t really say that for any of those other teams and I’m in my mid 30’s.

That said the past 10 years of Flyers hockey has been brutal. I’m excited for our kids but personally I’m ready to move on from the Giroux/Voracek era at this point unless we make a huge offensive addition to help them out.

I honestly thought you guys had one more cup in in you. You don't think Kapanen with Jake and Sydney could be a dynamite first line?
- PT21

I sure do, but that’s not the only box that needs checking. The margin of error gets smaller and smaller every year, and JR still doesn’t seem to truly “get it” anymore. Malkin and Crosby are both still premier players but they aren’t generational world beaters anymore. They could be datsyuk/zetteberg later years anchoring a great team, but you need pieces around them. You can’t sink so much cap into dead spaces, on the roster or otherwise, and compete at the highest level with lineups like Tampa/Colorado who have front line young players on ELCs. Like I said, this is the circle of life.

Bill, I'm not caring too much about the eagles playing like ass cause they just recently won the Super Bowl. Now if this continues for a few more years... I'll get a little mad cause they should have worked out the issues

Ha ha. I get a little nervous when people use the word context. Its a subjective term, and thus open to personal choice of definition.

In your case though, the specific context issue can be easily addressed. The selection of the 3 teams + Flyers is biased: because the majority of teams have simply not been around for that long. Crediting them for a shorter drought is like crediting a teenager for being able to forget Leon Stickle's call.

Don't get me wrong. I had zero exposure to Hockey before I moved to Philly in the early nineties (not many people play Hockey in south Oregon and south/east Asia). My fandom of Flyers has been a complete exercise in frustration and futility.

But I have to accept the data. That is why data exists - to get over one's personal circumstances and get a bird's eye view. And that view says the Flyers are not an anomaly.

On an unrelated issue, are you serious? Everyone here seems old as all (frank). Yesterday people were grooving about pre-Eagles Joe Walsh! Joe (frank)ing Walsh!
