The Toews idea seems weird to me. Not familiar with his contract but all indications is that the Hawks core was surprised by the move to rebuild. Assuming Toews has a trade clause of some kind in his contract, I am doubtful he would be eager to move to another rebuild that is in the beginning stages. Add to the fact, the cost to get him would likely be astronomical. Also add in the fact, that he may take ice away from our crowded centre position. However, he would slot nicely into the 1C position, which I can't say for any of our prospects right now.

Colin White - I was a fan when we drafted him but I have soured hard on him watching his development. Blame injuries and depth chart issues all you want but he has never impressed me individually. The success he has had was based on the line mates that he had. He doesn't make players around him better. To me, that is important to note, especially for a centre. It's a lot like Kyle Turris. Ok player playing with solid line mates, but you move him down the depth chart, he doesn't produce or make line mates better. And just like the Turris contract that was recently bought out, the White contract is looking ugly. Won't be an issue for a few years, but if the waiting and hoping strategy with White is still alive come 3 years down the road, when you've hopefully found a 1 and 2 centre, it will become an issue. I will happily eat these words if he can bounce back nicely, but right now, I just don't see it.

Toews has a full NMC. If he doesn't want to go through a rebuild in Chicago and decides to waive, it certainly won't be to go to another team in the middle of a rebuild like Ottawa.

talking about Toews coming here is fun, but it's completely unrealistic.....it's like saying what if we could get Crosby, or McDavid......it's just not gonna happen

I can see Connor Brown getting 1 year 3.4-3.7m

Don't see him getting 3 year deal, but could be possible 3.4-3.5

i'm fine with a 3 year deal for Brown, as long as the dollar value is low enough that they don't feel like they HAVE to play him in the top six if there are 2 clearly better options (Dadonov and Batherson jump to mind)

In a rebuild term is always the critical consideration. For the rebuilding team, the option needs to always be balanced by the pipeline and who is coming. For the player, they may be in the sweet spot of the prime of their career and maybe this is the best shot they have of cashing in.

I think both the team and Brown can find the right formula if they look at this deal as the platform that allows Brown to do much better as a key piece for Seattle in their early years.

I think that is right on target for both the player and team.

One year term sets up Brown as the ideal designated player destine for Seattle. Not a huge loss for the Sens. But a great character player and at the perfect age for an expansion team.

oops misread the lede.

it is a 3 year deal. Need to think about that. Maybe he still remains Seattle bound.

Corey Pronman has another of his ludicrous ranking lists of best NHL players. This one is somewhat special.

It is a short list of the best NHL player who are under the age of 23, do not play for Edmonton, was not born in Nova Scotia or Europe and started kindergarten in Arizona.

Good one. That bias applies to 90% of media guys.

I like it. Why is every deal their signing back loaded salary wise though?

Is it a cash flow issue. Some one said that it was all about escrow?

Good deal for Brown. I am a fan of the 3 year deals that aren't overlapping when the team will have to fork out cash to the young guys coming up, assuming some pan out.

i'm sure it's about knowing there will be much less revenue coming in this season vs future seasons

All the deals are backloaded because revenues are expected to be low for the next couple years and it's expected players to lose a large amount of their proximal years' dues to escrow, which is tied to league revenue in the CBA.

"assuming some pan out". Not much optimism with that assumption.

It's naïve to assume all the guys coming up will pan out. Some will, some won't. Being Sens fans, we should all know this.

I like the 3 year deals for Brown and Daddy for the reason that they will be off the books by the time Stuzle and Sanderson will be up for a new contract out of their entry deal. I think Stuzle at least is the real deal and the team will have to shell out a Chabot-type deal for him. That is a big ask for a team like Ottawa. I am less sold on Sanderson, but he could very well demand a significant raise as well. Ensuring you have that money available then is super key.

Once you start to give out/acquire contracts to guys that overlaps the time period where you have to resign young guys it gets dangerous. Murray and Zaitsev are examples. Murray should be ok. Zaitsev is an annoying contract to be stuck with for a small market team.

Enough money should be moved out/expire by the time Batherson, L. Brown, Tkachuk, Branstrom, Norris, Formenton, etc need new contracts (1-2 years). Still have to make room beyond that.

Spoiler alert, not all of those young players above will pan out to warrant a contract. I'd love to be wrong, but it's never happened in any rebuild where all your prospects pan out.
