I do agree with Max that there is plenty of blame to be shared, and it isn't.

Doctors in the states were incentivized to prescribe it.

Hell, I had a tooth extraction a few years ago. Dentist told me he was going to give me Oxy to dull the pain. I told him I didn't want any, as I had small kids in the house, and didn't want to take the risk of addiction.

He said, "OK, I'm just going to write you a prescription - if you don't want them, don't fill it, but I really think you are going to need them."

He wrote a prescription for 20 franking doses.

Yeah, you’re right that there’s a really ugly relationship between docs and drug companies in the States and Purdue pushed huge $ at them. For a long time neither the docs nor the FDA knew how bad the product was. For a long time there was knowledge it was addictive but not as bad as it was. There as staggering numbers about how many pills per people in a lot of towns in rural America. A huge chunk of cases coming through our courts are people looking for $ for opioids.
