I am a big fan of his game. He has, in my opinion, a really high hockey IQ. He looks bizarre with his long neck and unusual stride. My first impression of him was that he looked like a mascot in a video game. His shot is nothing spectacular, his hands are average, and his passing is also average. So at the core offensive level, he's nothing to gush about.
His puck pursuit, forecheck, and puck possession make him a fantastic penalty killer. If you look at Engvall's value compared to the team, he is by far the best penalty killing forward on this team. He was statistically a top-10 penalty killing forward in the league last year in terms of expected goals and actual goals against.
At even strength, that same methodology leads to more controlled play, less chances against, and a better transition from line-to-line when he retains the puck and hands it off to the next line.
EDIT: just realise that Engvall got his new contract already in Feb, even better!
You can really see that reflected in the fancy-stats, because the expected goals for is driven up when he's on the ice - it may not be as dramatic or as flashy as the elite offensive players, but through smart defensive play, he helps control the play. - Monkeypunk
Engvall is a keeper, and he was the best bottom6 fw in the playin series vs Columbus.
I like the guy, and the 1.25mln (just saw that) is another great signing.
take the training wheels off!! Dubas might be graduating from rookie GM status soon!! |

He's big but doesn't use his size enough and doesn't have hands...like....at all, IMO.
I would rather try the Hyman-lite guy, Joey Anderson.
4th liners should hit a lot and create some havoc and pain for the opposing Dmen if they can't put up points. Engvall just doesn't do enough of anything for me.
Edit: he is good on the PK tho....I will give you and Pat that. - underhill14
I'm not disagreeing .....I'm just saying give him a minute. If he can't utilize that size to create space, forecheck and muck up the front of the net then I agree move on. |

Guess I just miss it with Engvall.

Mirtle said on the podcast that Bogosian is a "terrific penalty killer, top percentile in the league". I couldn't find any stats to support that though. |

I can see the frustration level he would give you, though. He isn't physical, despite being 6'5 / 215.
He has that ability to contribute similarly to Hyman - a checking catalyst that can help transition the offense. Note that Engvall had 47 minutes with Tavares and 16 minutes with Matthews. By contrast, our other conversational lightning rod today, Mikheyev, had 138 minutes with Tavares and 32 minutes with Matthews -- but both Mikheyev and Engvall scored 8 goals in the year (Mikheyev played 9 fewer games and had 16 MORE mintues of 5v5 ice time)
. . . or in short, I think he needs more time to finish his audition.

I'd watch the NFL but the team I cheer for since 1994, the Cowboys (because they were the best team to pick in Madden 94 on the super nintendo) just lost their star QB and their defense is just horrendous..... so it's not worth watching.

1.645 AAV / 2 years for Mikheyev is a steal for the Leafs.

I almost thought the whole thing was a joke. Discussing a 2 year 1.65 AAV deal like their life depend on it... Really?

I just find it interesting how people irrationally hate things. When they can’t think of facts or reasoning to support why they complain is just funny.
When you constantly see it every day, people complaining about a 700K 17th forward signing to an arb hearing which when you look at past contracts, Mik didn’t get what he was worth on a 2 year deal.
I never liked irrational hate so I’ll fight it when I see it.
Maybe I shouldn’t care so much, that’s probably it but I think anyone who spends more than a minute a day on HockeyBuzz cares a bit too much about hockey |

We need to get out in front of the Dermott discussion.
What's the over/under on him? Under equals Dubas is the best. Over equals he's a pencil-necked nerd and got robbed again. |

I'd have to extract more data and spin more numbers to see where that comes from.
Bogosian didn't meet the minimum 60 minutes for the data I extracted yesterday - BUT - just doing a quick look, he did have a positive impact on both Buffalo's PK (which was poor) and Tampa's PK (which was above average). By that I mean that his actual GA/60 and xGA/60 was better than the average performance of the team. I glanced at the year before and the numbers weren't stellar - but he was playing on Buffalo who were also very poor.
I'd be inclined to take Mirtle as his word on it just because he would have spoken with far more knowledgeable people. |
