Voracek is still a good player, just overpriced at $8.25M/yr, but at $6M I think this is more palatable.
- jd250

So we would essentially be paying Laine more than almost any other player in the NHL. The $9-10MM his agent is alluding to as his ask and then the $2MM we are holding for Voracek. $11-12MM investment for a player who hasn't been consistent and will still takes shifts and games off?

we can do better

I'm surprised Sami Vatanen hasn't signed yet. He would of been a nice 1 year addition if he was willing to accept 3-4m, but probably looking for more or going overseas.

been saying this since before FA started, that said, waiting has brought the price down. Give Fletch credit for knowing the market, something we couldn't see as much. It also makes me think that they really wanted what Gus offers. His puck skills etc.

I’d be willing to go one of TK, Sanhiem, or Farabee along with a lotto protected 1st for Liane. I don’t think Winnipeg is going to do any better than that.

Sami V it is then. Hamonic requested a trade to Western Canada once. I can’t see him coming back East.

Overall, though, rankings are tough undertakings and I think the top end of the list is dead on. Charlie asked Brent the right questions, too. No one's list will be exactly the same.

Thanks a lot, Bill.

Disappointed to learn about Isaac's mental self-demotion. I thought he had 2nd line upside.

Yes, good questions from Charlie.

Regarding O'Brien, here is the Q&A, in which I highlight what I believe to be certain nuances:

Charlie: O’Brien put up good numbers last year in the BCHL, where he tied for fourth in points. But considering his age and pedigree, is it at all concerning that his numbers weren’t even better? You’ve got a 17-year-old in Kent Johnson in that league breaking the 100-point plateau, and O’Brien spent most of the season at age 20.

Flahr:
I think that’s a fair question. Obviously, he was injured again there and missed some time. However, he also rounded out his game a little bit, which is good. It wasn’t just all about points. I think he was conscious of that and I think he was just starting to play right. He was getting his points, but he was playing more of a 200-foot game, and the team was winning games as well.

It’s a huge year for him. He’s going to spend time at (Boston University), and one thing they do a great job of there is the strength and conditioning program. I’m hoping that he’s used this pause wisely, and when they do start up again, he’s made big strides and starts the season playing with confidence.

Laine deal is just too rich for me. We are on the verge of having 3 really good home grown D in Provy/sanheim/Meyers that I am unwilling to part with and the other player they would most likely be interested in is TK and that’s a no thanks for me. tK is a cost controlled good player on his current contract.
- ClaudeFather

I agree with you for all except Sanheim.

Also, some of the stuff Tomahawk posted the other day and the stats we unearthed in that discussion made me hesitate a tad. I think I have personally gone from agnostic to 'leaning against' given what he would demand and what the price tag would be and the sheer risk that seems to be a part of his play.

I’d trade Konecny for Laine without a second thought. What really depends for me is what goes out along with TK. Ghost, Yes! Sanheim, No!

The reason I would be fine with moving Konecny for Laine is, Laine is younger and his ceiling is much higher. I also don’t like the benefit of the doubt Konecny is already receiving fit his pour playoff outing and the fact that his contract is “controllable”. It’s just another word for cheap, so we’re fine with cheap results.

The addition of Foerster also has me more at ease about moving a young winger. We’ve still got Oskar, Frost, Farabee and some other kids in the system that it’s not going to kill us to upgrade a wing spot by adding Liane.

I’m also absolutely not including Sanhiem with TK in a deal. It’s one or the other and a lotto protected 1st.

Great point! I’m not pushing any of these young players out the door but we’d need to make room for them. Where does Frost fit right now? Are JvR or Voracek movable? Who is our next superstar once we decide to move on from Giroux?

Could you even imagine if Nolan Patrick was healthy and living up to being a former second overall pick like Laine? The market dictates what a player is paid. Patrick Laine will get his money and it will be deserved.

Actually what it is, is a non starter. If you called Winnipeg with that offer, there would be no conversation.

That’s the other issue. Giroux isn’t getting any younger and we need to keep pace with a division that just keeps adding more and more elite young talent up front. Where’s our next Barzal, Hughes, Lafreniere? I’m high on our kids too but that’s just a different level.

That's not at all accurate. When you first brought it up you were swooning over the thought of acquiring Laine like a teen age girl over her first crush. You chastised anyone who thought differently. Now you're agnostic moving towards leaning against. What has happened is that you've been actually educated on the move.

Sanheim is going to be a really, really good player in this league. No doubt.

Another great point. Which is why I’m not gonna brush off Patrick Laine and talk up Travis Konecny.
