Yeah but a Laine trade would net the Flyers a scorer, but then guts other parts of their roster. So I guess still chicken vs egg. I mean the Voracek trade would never happen, ever. Even if the Flyers retained 2m of his salary the Flyers still wouldn't get a 1st rounder from anyone let alone a 22 year old scorer.

I see it this way. Winnipeg has no money and have several long term contracts that I think will be difficult to get out from. Therefore Winnipeg has to go for it now, their window to the cup is right now. They cannot afford to sign Laine long term, they just can't, so they need to trade him. If Laine does not want to play for Winnipeg this year, I don't think Winnipeg can afford to go into the season with this headache. So I am thinking that Winnipeg can add a good player like Voracek to their team at a price that is affordable to them (because the Flyers are covering some of the money), and get rid of a problem at the same time that may even enhance their chance to win a cup now.

I don't agree with others that say Winnipeg would hang up, its a conversation starter that may lead to trade that helps both teams.

You ridiculously overrate this factor of Laine not being happy. As if it would cause Winnipeg to accept what is really a poor trade for them and trade a 22 year old goal scorer for Voracek. If they want to trade Laine, they can do much, much better. Winnipeg would absolutely hang up, while holding in from busting out laughing. Fletcher would never embarrass himself by making that offer. Any other thought on your part is simply delusional.

Not even mentioning who the Flyers would lose in a trade for Laine, I’d be pretty mad if the plan from the start was not to extend or re-sign him. You can’t lose a quality young player plus and not keep Laine. Yikes!

His pipe dream is that the Flyers are trading Voracek for Laine, then letting Laine walk. Which clears up cap space for the future. I honestly don't know how someone can make that suggestion with the current NHL cap landscape and how difficult it has been to move money for teams.

Part...a big part of the problem with trades now is the flat cap...younger more cost-friendly is more valuable than ever. The Flyers are rich there which is why I think WPG would target the Flyers for trade. Of course, I don’t want to see the Flyers create a cap issue with paying Laine and create a hole that they can’t fill now because of the loss in trade.

The way I see it, to absorb Laine, Flyers have to be able to trade out JVR and possibly Ghost somewhere.

We wouldn’t be trading for Adam Oates at the trail end of his career, heading into what we think might be a deep playoff run.
