clutterbuck - that's a big loss to the team, especially since they won't replace that character

Reading stories about an all Canadian division and the GM discussions post draft. Apparently Detroit and Yzerman are furious with the results. Indications that changes may be coming so no team can drop as much as 3 full spots. Also Seattle is guaranteed 3rd overall selection.

So, pretty safe to conclude that the bottom of the Canadian Division would result in a top 4 pick, perhaps top 2. Who could finish lower than the Sens?

Glaring obvious choice. Montreal is in total free fall. I have difficulty trying to figure out what this team is trying to do. They have some good prospects coming but don't seem to want to provide a framework for competitive growth.

Montreal will definitely finish ahead of Ottawa but not by that much. To me Bergeron was the wrong choice to be made GM a few years ago. It would be interesting to see what the runner up, Pierre McGuire would have done. I hope Pierre gets his shot one day as I think he would excel as an NHL gm.

I think the Leafs are a good regular season team. Signing Tavares was a huge blunder. Trading Kadri was just plain dumb. I think the Leafs can hang on for one more season in terms of making playoffs. But, no reason to expect anything different in playoffs.

It's another very good signing... Tierney will serve a useful role in transitioning some of the younger players into the top-C roles on the team, and absorb some of the tough minutes/PK time. The dollars/terms are also pretty much perfect, both in terms of development timeframe, and potential trade deadline return. Beyond that, if they can't safely replace Tierney by the 2022/23 season, it will be evidence of things going very badly with the team.

I am a huge fan of Formenton. (Funny I was always a huge fan of Pageau right from the day he was drafted.)

For some reason I love 3rd line players. Good to see them able to step up into bigger roles. Tierney is a very good role player who fits so nicely with what the Sens are trying to achieve.

i think they're long term plan is making him an attractive pick for the expansion draft.....he's a productive player, on a reasonable deal, that Seattle would likely be able to either re-sign to another reasonable deal, or move at the deadline for a decent return.

That was my first thought as well, trade him at the deadline next season. Although, I think the team would optimistically not be sellers at that point 1.5 years from now.

Ultimately, you're talking about the role that a player where the likes of White, Pinto, Norris, or Greig should be playing in 2yrs time. Tierney is a very useful player, and I agree even on a good team would be effective - but given the Senators' prospect depth, this just isn't the roster spot they need to invest UFA-type dollars in.

It's also an interesting bit of expansion bait they might consider leaving open, in lieu of losing one of the younger forward prospects who could find themselves forced to expose. According to CapFriendly, that list includes Tkachuk, White, Batherson, Paul, Brown, Chlapik, Abramov, Balcers, and Davidsson. Now, it's clear they'll protect Tkachuk, Batherson, White, and Brown, but you could see the likes of Lajoie/Jaros available on the blue line, as well as Hogberg/Daccord/Gustavsson at goal.
