Pretty damn fortunate for the Sabres that Olofsson's birthday misses the window by all of 19 days to be a UFA in 2 years. - kingcong39
It is very fortunate. At his age, he's strange to deal with.
Ullmark is pretty close too. 1 month would have made him UFA this year.

Hall and eichel are the two im concerned
Hall is a like a less talented version of Eichel. He is still highly skilled, but a tier underneath him. - Mentalorgasm5
I completely disagree. Hall is the closest player in flat out skill, talent, and ability to Eichel.
Hall was the mvp of the nhl only 2 years ago on the freaking devils. Who was his center? Lol
Dahlin plays defense. So I’m not counting him |

But, but, but
Jersey something, didn't back check something
Gotcha covered already Bossman.
I get trying to control the 2021 budget so going with a 1 year deal does have merit here.
The risk is Sam has a very good year with Eichel and Hall (cause that is what the team does, maximizes a players production in contract years), they could be looking at a big pay day when more big paydays come next season.
Maybe Kerry and Tim know these are the end times! |

I was thinking that too.
For those who say vanek. Skill wise yes vanek was skilled but not even close to as good as a skater as hall |

More than the extra $800k they did for 3 more years?
I could see it though for sure.
Edit, at 19 points, Sam is 2.7x the points producer... $2.2m x 2.7 = $5.94m equivalent.
Yup, they over paid Girgs who is abysmal on the PK, one of the worst in the league...AND gave him 3 years.
Take away that complete blunder and the Sabres have had a decent offseason to date...now just rationalize the 2RhD and use them to round out the holes! - IonSabres
But , but , but sam ....
He's a core guy at 8 years 7+ million.
Told you ions. , sam isnt the star you keep thinking.
1 year was my prediction. - last night at 11 pm actually.

Yes sir.
If we can get MVP level Hall with Eichel I have no doubt they both finish top 5 in scoring this year. |

I see Sam as the type of player whose quiet game slowly builds year by year and his plateau leaves you wondering, "how did he get there?" - Michael Pachla
Rhino reminds me of the Sedin twins in Vancouver. They never got any respect but eventually they both finished with >1,000 points in their careers and might make the HOF.

We can all reed stats on a piece of paper and compare.
Sam got a very fair deal for both sides.
He got paid as a low 50 point producer. Right where he belongs without eichel.

No sam news, but in regards to the Botterill firing :
Again, take as a rumor, but my "source " has been very credible.
Botts was given an ultimatum, the "lean" pricing scale and basically said "no". He wasnt going to be held back by an internal cap.
Also , he hired tons of over sea scouts who didnt hit on any talent. They had some 20+ overseas scouts at times, especially in sweden.
Rochester and buffalo were not working as a unit.
Communcation Issues between ralph and Rochester (taylor) - thus the house cleaning.
Thought I would share ☝️ |

Sam's a great guy, sure he took less for those reasons.
Nothing to do with building a "hall of fame" Sedin twins type career. Playing with eichel ?
What happened to 7 or 8 million?
Called this contract to the dime kiddo |

Covid obviously plays a big part.
But I love how this team just kicks the can down the road every year.
Next year
Dahlin
Reinhart
Jokiharju
Hall
Staal
Montour
McCabe
Potentially Ullmark and Olofsson again
Lots of raises if things go well.
At least Girgensons is locked up though |

You were right on last night. Good call.
His moves are creating a massive mess next summer.
UFA: Hall, Staal, Montour, McCabe, Ullmark?
RFA: Dahlin, Joker, Sam, VO?
Sam and Risto could be entering their final year before UFA.

I’d rather have flexibility then a bunch of players tied up long term.
It gives us options.
