What would Girgs have gotten on the open market? 1 year @ 1m? Still unsigned? Can't imagine 3 years or a raise anywhere, let alone both. - Lunaion
I also don’t like giving anyone a raise when it’s out of their norm for their production. |

He'd be signed, he's part of the group of 4th liner defensive types that teams picked over. He sure as (frank) wouldn't be paid over 2M, and he sure as (frank) wouldn't get more than 2 years.

Pre-covid, the number is probably a little high, considering they're only buying 1 year of UFA. Not doubting you because I have no source on it, just seems to me it's high. Or, maybe it's as high as they were prepared to go.
Next year, feel free to bookmark, I'm guessing, if the financials of the league see the light at the end of the tunnel.... 6.5x5. - TheSabresTaco
Listen attitude, 89 is right and I'll put that up against anything you say.
How dare you doubt either 89 or homie.
Internal budget, respect the yacht , that's where terry practices making poker faces.
7 million x 3 years leaving the mega superstar an ufa?
Makes sense.

I saw a few teams released 3rds already.. are the Sabres? - TheSabresTaco
Are they allowed to since they have a regular jersey change?

Good post
At least your consistent. No faith in the Sabres/ girgensons deal. Fair enough
They gave a raise to one of a few players who overachieved last season.
12 goals and 5th in goal scoring on the 25th ranked team. Regular linemates, larrson and okposo.
Based on last season and his 18 of 19 points being 5 x5 .
Why does this get thrown out the window?
2.2 seems fair. The coach saw this player 1st hand and wants to build a team around effort and accountability.
If girgensons signed for 1.4 would you like him?
Or does he fall too much for that contract? - Boss34
It's pretty simple...
In a Covid-19 world, the Sabres saw fit to give a 19 pt player a 37% raise, which is also $800k over his best comparable of Johan Larsson at $1.4..who signed under the same conditions, was viewed by many as being better, played a more challenging position of C rather than LW (easiest position to play). That $800k is actually 57% over market value.
Pure and simple, they failed to use the Covid price decrease to their advantage.
They made it up somewhat with Sam though, probably a $200k underpayment. |

I don't know the jersey rules. Based on the past and the 2 or 3 year rule, maybe you're right. |

Good news is that a BO is very easy for them, if they need to. Would be pretty embarrassing though, next year. |

What arbitrator was going to give Kahun $3.5M ?
Bertuzzi got $3.5M and he had a respectable case of getting $4M plus.
Kahun would have gotten $2.25-2.5M.
I don’t know where this $3.5M keeps coming from.
The Sabres gave him a deal sub $2M and appeared got the market right on Kahun but managed to overpay Girgensons by $800K. - Pegullaville

Ka-boo-hoo-hun is a 35 - 40 point player- bad asset management letting him walk.
So stripes , you said ka-boo-hoo-hun is gonna make 3.5 -40?
No, I didnt say that.
What I said was, players that score 35-40 points make 3.5-4 million a year
Hope this clears it up. I personally do not understand the love affair with a guy that dressed 6 games in a Sabres uniform.
So much for loyalty or being a career sabre. |

Probably right, but there are some decent players still unsigned. If he was holding out for a comparable deal in UFA, I think he's still looking for work.

40 point players make $3.5 million.
I will still stand by that. What I didn’t say is an arbitration ruling would be that high.
Being a career anything doesn’t happen much unless you’re a superstar and even that isn’t a guarantee
Why want the same players year in year out when they haven’t made the playoffs in almost 10 years? |

If Girgensons signed for 1.4 for the same term I wouldn’t be thrilled with the term but it would be at least something on par salary wise with what he should be making. - Stripes77
👍 I appreciate the discussion
Obviously girgensons will be a key guy to watch and have fun with.
I think you sign and pay guys that proves their worth.
Clearly ralph feels the same way.
You should see the way girgensons autograph glimmers in the sunlight 😉 |

Im guessing girgensons plays with eichel in his contract year and resigns long term for 5 million a year in order to seal his fate as successor to okposo at the hockey academy |
|
|
|
Lol at anyone who think girgensons at 2.2 mill is a bad deal still.
That contract won’t kill us for overpaying him by 700K. Sorry to burst your bubbles
Okposo overpaid by 3 mill or skinner overpaid by 2- 3 million is way worse
Yet 700K extra is a bad deal 😂😂😂 My god the sky is falling |

I think the twitter rumor was that every team was getting a “throwback” type jersey.
So the Sabres goat head would be perfect candidate for that.
Since we are going back to royal blue anyways full time |

It’s not that it’s awful. It’s that they (Adams, Ralph and Pegulas) thought it was smart to overpay a 4th liner and give him 3 years. He’s overpaid by about 40%. It’s not the deals that absolutely kill teams but it’s a deal that shows their incompetence in seeing and signing players to value deals. You can pay a comparable player and a 13th forward what you paid him. |

I understand that but they were not walking away and had the money to sign him and were prepared for it if needed. - SABRES 89
Let me guess, Sam's agent said , hey sabres , we realize you have the money and are willing to sign him regardless, we just want 5.2 million. Put the extra million towards girgensons overpayment.
Or
The free agent market is flooded with guys that are more suited to Ralph's vision. They just replaced him with a better winger and former league mvp. For 8 million.
We have younger cheaper guys. Maybe they move risto + to the peg for laine? Then use risto and Sam's salary to pay laine?
So why would we be locked into paying someone who flat out stopped skating and gave up glaringly on a play that cost the team the game? Having a 3rd party look at a piece of paper and determine a players worth? When the coach had a whole season to determine #23's actual value?
Sam's numbers are facts. His league ranking among wingers are facts.
Fact that he really hasnt done it without the best passer in the entire nhl? |

The money is relative to the contract. If you want to look at it that way its still overpayment by 30-40% across the board
If you continually overpay with you will not have the cap room to push your team over the edge when the time comes. Its really simple regardless if you like the player or not |

Isnt there some kind of intangible to the market? An unknown? They signed there own guy, prior to having the benefit of the doubt of seeing a stalled market.
Again, I'm not gonna hide from any of this if girgensons is terrible next season. I trust what the Sabres are doing. I personally couldn't have managed it better.
Pay the heart and sole guy for his effort
