I disagree. The team is trying to form a new identity. Hard work , grind and play a checking game.
Why get rid of a player that fits the new identity ?
Why replace a player who the coach has coached and fits his style?
They paid girgensons ufa valued money, before the free agent market was set.
Just my opinion - Boss34

They have girgensons projected as a 3rd liner I'm guessing? So ufa 3rd liner , 12 goal scorer. 5th on the team in goals scored, isnt player 14-16 @ forward.
Its outplaying your contract and getting a raise that was deserved territory
Wonder what the 5th leading goal scorer on an nhl team averages in salary? Probably more than 2.2 .
I'm hoping being in the chase (couple games left) keeps eichel around. Probably wishful thinking.
Playoff sweep? Maybe.
You are probably correct, just making it may keep him around another year, but not really satisfy him. - Boss34
5th leading scorer on a very bad hockey team is no prize.
He shouldnβt be in the top 8-10 on a playoff team.

Expecting him to score double digit goals again is a long shot as well.

As much as I agree and think heβs been over hyped since his green mountain glade days. Heβs a coaches wet dream, neck down hard work and yes sir kind of player. The Kougar club has claimed him, let us move on to the next issue. - washedup20

Girgensons is Paul Gaustad 2.0 - Here past his expiration date, falls down more than a toddler learning how to walk. Except Gaustad was excellent on the dot and he fetched a 1st round pick. Girgensons is neither good on the dot nor will he net us a 1st rounder from a desperate team.
He sucks. |

My guess is all of those players were paid more than 2.2 million? Well actually 1.4 million?
And we all know contracts escalate.
Good points Michael . Appreciate the back up π
Probably saved a few million over 3 years π |

Girgensons is a microcosm if the issues with the entire team.
In the last two offseasons we have overpaid an impending UFA to stay while both players shot above their normal shooting percentages.
Skinner is a $7M-$7.5 winger who is making $9M because we paid a 25 goal scorer a premium for scoring 40 with Eichel.
Girgensons is a replaceable 4th liner that we overpaid by $700K
Okposo, Risto, Eakin, are all overpaid.
We have wasted between $10-12M is cap space between the aforementioned players.
It starts to add up after a while. |

$2.25M for a third-line/bottom-six center who's capable of around 15 goals/25 points and also helps the pk doesn't seem all that high to me

There's also the matter of Girgensons' astronomical shooting % last year
But in the interest of placating Boss and ending the conversation, ill just say he's very good and worth every penny! |
