Yes - and I subsequently read the article.
You asked if it was worth it to play facing a $1B loss.
I go back again to NBC and the Canadian networks, who need sports programming in the Jan-Jun time period. And, with new contract negotiations comin up in the US, the league will try very hard to show that they are a good business partner. - StLBravesFan
Or they could say "we're not playing unless you kick in another $500M TV networks."

According to @frank_seravalli, it would cost NHL owners $2.7B to play next season, but they'd only bring in $1.8B - an almost $1B loss. Is it worth that to play?

How does that equate with the 50/50 split with the players?

Just my gut feeling but the core is on board for now with the youth movement but Colliton's roster decisions including deployment of special teams could start to grind their gears over time.
If that happens, I would expect at least Keith and Seabrook to request to be traded.
While it's great that Bowman and Colliton have new-found confidence to run the team the way they think is the best direction, I think it has emboldened at least Colliton to say and do things that will just tick off the core.
I actually haven't minded at all what Bowman has publicly shared this week. Colliton is another story. For someone who is supposed to be a great communicator, his lack of tact is offputting. - Theo Fox
And I think the new direction and public statements are meant to ruffle the feathers of the "core" to be honest. Reading between the lines, they're saying we want the team to play a certain way and if you're not on board we can make arrangements. In a way baiting them to request a trade. More directed at 2 and 7. Would it be easy to trade Keith or seabs? No but it's easier if mgmt knows where they stand and the NMC are waived. |

Ii do not believe that Bowman has intent whatsoever to play mind games with players. I do believe that if he meant to express the reality of trading them, a simple phone call or meeting would be the choice of communication.
Quite frankly there is a need for leadership and a need for the experience and skill of the core players while the young rookies break in. A rebuild should not be a total house cleaning ASAP where no stone is left unturned. For the sake of team morale and the fanbase - including the season ticketholders - a respectable line up does keep everyone entertained.
Now that I used the word "mind games," I will have the song "Mind Games circa early 1970's by former Beattles John Lennon stuck in my mind repeating itself for a couple of hours. Come to think about if there had been a total teardown this past month, the appropriate song instead could have been "Games Without Frontiers, War Without Tears" by Peter Gabriel circa roughly early 80's.
Looking at the situation at hand, Bowman is faced with this reality:
"You have to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold them
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sitting at the table
There'll be time for counting
When the dealing is done," by Kenny Rogers.
There won't be counting of proceeds when fans return if the on ice product is really bad. "The Gambler" is not Bowman to such extreme. |

Rumors that the 2020-21 season could have realigned divisions with one for all Canadian teams. The Hawks would be in the same division as:
Blues
Predators
Wings
Jackets
Panthers
Lightning
Hurricanes
I like the Blues, Predators, and Wings. Jackets are fine.
The Florida and Carolina teams are weird from a geography standpoint (i.e. where's the Wild?) but actually wouldn't mind playing those teams more often. - Theo Fox
If the divisions realign for next year, looks like Dallas and Minnesota, being the westernmost teams get assigned to the west to join COL, ARI, VGK, SJS, ANA, LA.
FL, TB and CAR not really geographically "Central" teams go to Central anyway because the Northeast teams will probably form their own division - BOS, NYR, NYI, NJ, BUF, PHI, PIT, WSH.
Central would then be FL, TB, CAR, CBJ, NSH, DET, STL and the Hawks.
Getting back to that Athletic article. Each division may have its own "hub" city with Columbus as a likely candidate for the Central. Maybe Buffalo for the East, Anaheim or Vegas for the West. Canadian hub is up for grabs. Again all speculation on the writer's part, but it sounds like he did a lot of research into the matter. |

For comparison so far:
Leafs cap reallocation:
*Signed/re-signed Mikheyev, Simmonds, Vesey, Thornton, Spezza and Boyd for ~$450,000 less than they owed Johnsson/Kapanen.
*Signed Brodie, Bogosian and Lehtonen for $300,000 less than they paid Ceci/Barrie last season.
*Gave Dermott a ~$10,000 raise.
Hawks cap allocation:
Hawks essentially swap Maatta for Zadorov for an even cap hit. (factoring in cap retention)
Swap Saad for Suter for 4M less (factoring in cap retention)
Janmark replaces Cogliano at a 1M increase
Wallmark in for Strome (if not resigned) for similar cap hit.
Which approach is better? |

Sounded like each team would go to the hub for a week or two - four or six teams at a time - with somehow teams rotating in and out - playing four games each per week.
Meanwhile, the NBA is looking to start its 70 game (about) season on Dec. 22 - no information about hubs or local facilities.
And, of course, battles between both leagues and both PAs about money. After increased escrows for the RTP last season, the NHL players are looking for the same 72% of pay for next season no matter how many (few) games are played. Don’t know how all of that ties into the ultimate 50/50 split of HRR - I thought the players would pay that back over several years.

I'm not a big Bowman fan but I'm hoping he has learned from all his experience and uses it well to build a team that can compete for a Stanley Cup.
I have to ask, if Stan isn't the man then who would you bring in? |

Hawks 8th, Wings 7th, Fla 6th....
Then 5 teams looking for the Top 4 spots, which I assume would be the playoff teams, Top 4.
Tampa a definite...Nash and St.L....next tier...Clb and Car fighting for the last spot.
May not be EXACT, but betting it's pretty close to that! (Nash and Car may flip-flop, cuz Canes have a pretty decent team there...)
EDIT,,,,,,after a quick thought of it....
Tampa
Blues
Carolina
Nash
Clb
Fla
Wings
Hawks

Leafs getting a lot of credit of CAP management, when most of their adds are a group of questionable, low-priced (By NECESSITY), very mediocure pieces that will be mish-mashed in the bottom 6 or bottom pairing D-men.
I am not impressed in the least and highly doubt they are ANY better than last year....

I think it's more a statement directed to the young players. The core plays the right way, it's unfortunate Toews made those comments and goes to show he isn't aware of the talent level on his own team. They won't trade the core, they can't afford it.

I look at it more 4&4 with Nash in the bottom four. Maybe 3&5, throw CLB down there also. |

I don't agree, I'm a fan who will continue to go to games even if they suck. I appreciate the SC years so much and Rocky's commitment to winning a SC, and appreciate being real to go under construction again. |

Because Stan and JC want to give him a chance. If he doesn’t have a lights-out training camp I’d send him to Rockford. |

That's an apples/oranges question. Toronto is in "win now" mode and the Hawks are not. Whatever moves the Hawks make over the next few years should be viewed with a long term perspective rather than the perspective of how the move impacts the short term.

I think a majority of fans will be cautious. I know that I will want to see the young kids perform in person. I would feel the environment is more a safe bet once an inoculation is popular and works.
I will cross that bridge when the time comes. Meanwhile, check out the 2021 Entry Draft prospects on draftsite.com. we shall be drafting a top prosoect, likely a tier one prospect. There is a deep class and a lot of dmen and centers in round one. Especially centers. |

In California, you probably won t be seeing fans at games for at least another year. They still don t know when they are going to partially open a Disneyland.
