I worked at the Goodyear in Ardmore and personally worked on his Cadillac (the Z12 Bentley he called it) for a number of years. That car had close to 200K on it and he refused to let it go. Larry was one of the most interesting and colorful people I've ever met, and was always willing to talk hockey. He gave me a VHS tape of him on the old Don Cherry show, which had to have been from the 80's (which I still have) and a bunch of signed random stuff. I miss him, and how I heard he lived out his last few years really broke my heart. Thanks Bill for the trip down memory lane! - iroc4me2
Thanks for the story, Roc. That and Gane Hart's tale that Bill recounted for us, I'd think that he may have at least been an entertaining color guy for today's broadcasting environment. At least he'd be better than Milbury. OK, maybe not a guy up in the booth, but in a guy-between-the-benches role.
PS: Bill: Thanks too for retelling Hart's tale on Zeidel. |

Out of left field with this when all the numbers suggest we’re heading into another big surge? The league has the responsibility to protect its players, employees, and fans and that should come first before rushing back to normalcy for the sake of normalcy. - hereticpride
And I recall seeing in the news the other day about a CDC study that suggested hockey rinks in particular are worse than outdoor sports venues, given the playing environment (poor air circulation at the rink level because of the plexiglass). I don't know if it's the same for big arenas, but I don't think the NHL is too keen to allow possibly of asymptomatically infectious spectators in the stands, even if they were to enforce social distancing and the ticket purchase serves as a contract to waive any liability for the league. But it would still be a liability for the players and staff. With the excitement of the game, there's no way to ensure everybody keeps their masks properly in place at all times. |

while indoors the HVAC system helps a lot with circulation, you need precautions and no way you can do fans but it can be safe. They rec leagues and the kid leagues have been going since May down here with 7 different rinks, only a handful of cases, not even sure if they were rink related. But then I did here of an outbreak up North

I heard of an outbreak in New England, but I believe the CDC study focused on a bad outbreak at hockey rinks in Tampa, FL.
It still remains the same for the league. They won't put they players at that kind of risk for something that they have no control over (as opposed to other risks inherent in playing the game itself that they do have a degree of control over). Until people stop only thinking about themselves and being more considerate of all others around them (even if they don't particularly like those others), I don't think the NHL will be in a rush to play an entire "normal" season in front of live spectators. So like Bill has reported, while they have a goal to begin some sort of season in Jan or Feb of 2021, it remains to be seen on how it will be implemented. |

The NHL simply needs to decide if it is financially feasible to play next season without fans in the stands. It's really that simple in my view. Honestly, I'm not even sure if fans would choose to attend in high numbers.

I agree. I think that's the problem they're having: Still trying to figure out how to operate without facing financial dire straits. They're not quite in the same boat as the NBA, who are tentatively planning for a pre-Christmas start to a shortened season with TV viewers only. The NBA is in a better financial situation to do that.
EDIT: I'm patient and OK with the uncertainty while they suss things out. |
