If the Leafs didn't have a Phil Kessel buyout on the books they'd be under the cap ceiling right now. |

For sure. But no trade clauses are things that players need to earn and should be tactics to get their price down a bit. Not given to career nothings.
I think it's kinda insane that Holl can potentially say "yeah, no. I don't want to be traded there." |

but but but Dubie is such a bad mother(frank)ing GM; he crushed poor Dermott... Why was he softer than slime on this one? Is he a bit on the mad side? - 21peter
I mean, in the COVID world, would Holl have managed to secure a 2Mx3 contract with an M-NTC? Probably not. The landscape has changed.
But still... I think he's just fine at 2Mx3. I want to see more of him with Muzzin. |

Ehh... it's only 10 teams and it's a short term, cheap contract. Much ado about nothing, methinks. - mjones242
I would expect that Holl or Engvall are Seattle-bound next year anyway. |

2M for a guy that can play in the top 4 makes sense to me.
People got sour on him when he had to be their number 1 D when Rielly and Muzzin went down. I for one don’t expect him to play well when being tasked with that.
But when he plays behind some D ahead of him he’s done well.
I can’t ask much more for a guy that makes 2M. 1.3M over league minimum. |

There is no explanation for a 28 year old with a hand full of games of mediocre hockey at the NHL level getting a partial no trade clause on a 3 year deal. - GreatGigInTheSky
He played well in the top 4.
2M is what he gets. 1.3M over league minimum.
Who cares about a partial no trade clause. If they need to trade him they can, 20 other teams would be interested in a 4/5 D getting 2M. |

I like that its 1 year. Its good for Dermott to prove himself as well as he doesn't need expansion protection since he doesn't have a contract for the following year. - Aaron_85

I always hope players for teams I don't like win their arbitration and get more money but I think Buttalo's number is closer than the players here. - GreatGigInTheSky
yeah, no way I see Ullmark worth 4.1 at this point.

He’ll be arbitration eligible so depending on the year he has they may not want him.
They could choose holl at 2M over Dermott at what Weegar is about to get. |

I don't like nothing players that the team is better off without. Sue me.
Holl isn't good and I'd take 8 of the guys they've got over him if I include Sandin and Liljegren. $2M is too much for a pressbox player so trade him and free up $2M. Gives them more CAP to work with so they can make a better add at the deadline.
I don't know, makes way too much sense to me. |

Liljegren is not even close to being ready to be an everyday defender and Sandin, who looks like he may have the tools to be a legit Top 4 d-man, is too weak, too green, and too left-handed to take Holl's spot at this stage. But, and more importantly, Sandin and Liljegren can (and will) be buried - that flexibility is key to maintaining the cap situation.
Having said that, it's going to be interesting seeing how Dermott/Lehtonen/Holl perform in training camp. We'll probably see 7D dress on some nights and a lot of rotation in and out of the lineup for each on nights they only have 6D. Should be fun seeing how the situation evolves during the course of the season. |

1st paragraph- Yeah, that's why I said if I included them. They're much more important to the team going on but right now Holl is better. That still makes Holl #7.
2nd- I hope Lehtonen comes out flying like he is in the K and I'm happy Dermott will be healthy. |

Kind of hard to rank Lehtonen, a guy who has never played a single game in the NHL, over Holl at this point, no?
I'd also argue against Dermott > Holl. He's about as mehdiocre as a player can get. Plus, he seems to enjoy sporting speedos and cornrows. |
