Leafs gain a small amount of cap relief, SJ stays cap compliant and Marner goes west hopefully not to bite the leafs in the ass at some point.

Flames Trade: Johnny Hockey (2 years until UFA), and a 2021 4th round pick to NJ for Palmieri (1 year left on his contract until UFA), Ty Smith, and a 2021 2nd round pick.

Rationale: NJ gets an elite playmaker to play with Hischier, and a local boy who has name recognition, can help fill the seats once fans are permitted back. Palmieri scores goals, will be good in Cgy and hopefully they can resign him. JH is gone from Cgy in two years regardless. It's time to move him. This is a fair trade from both sides, IMO. A lot of Flames fans won't think this is enough. But you get a very good 2nd line player in Palmieri (albeit only for 1 year guaranteed) to replace JH's production somewhat, a pretty good defenseman prospect who should be ready in 2 years if he develops, and probably a high 2nd round pick. Might be able to add something else to bump NJ's pick up to a 1st.

What you should have done was . You should have moved out a salary like Nylander and went all in on Pietrangleo. Was a huge Mistake in not going all in on him. Or a bonafide #1 goaltender. You have offense. You need those other 2 things.

Anaheim gets two players at similar positions who are younger and better suited to their timeline.

Toronto gets two experienced players, both under 30 who have two more years under contract. This gives them an elite top 4 without taking too much from their forward.

The only reason this deal doesn’t happen in real life is because of the Seattle draft because it would force the Leafs to protect 4&4 instead of the 7&3. But it would give them a serious team for this year for a serious run.
