Consumers have to be smarter and have the self-control to know when they should consider upgrading. Consumers should also be demanding companies be as green as possible and, if at all possible, be more socially responsible (both in terms of 3rd world labour force and manipulative marketing).

You could go amuse yourself by seeing Garf blogging as "Mark" something or other...

I made an apple crisp yesterday.
I hunted around for a lower-sugar recipe since some had obscene amounts of sugar and butter. It turned out really well.
So I proceeded to eat just about the whole thing over the course of the day.

You could definitely make an argument that not every one needs the latest and greatest phone. Most users don't require the horsepower that some of these newer models boast. A lot of people upgrade for no better reason than as some sort of status symbol. Others have the insatiable desire to always be on the cutting edge for... reasons. The gaming industry is also constantly pushing the technical envelope which requires the latest and greatest hardware to support their apps (though one wonders how much sloppy code is a factor here).
Having said that, my company produces an ERP app that most definitely benefits from as much performance power as you can throw at it. When you're querying and working with large amounts of data, a larger screen size, more memory, and more CPU power is a huge advantage.
Not everyone requires apps that really push the phone's hardware, but we're definitely moving in a direction where the cell phone is replacing desktops and laptops as the primary productivity tool in a user's arsenal.
I usually replace my phone every 3-4 years and I think that's a pretty reasonable life span. I'm amazed at what I used in the past and thought was functionally sound/efficient (my phone needed a tactile keyboard goddamit!) and what I'm using now (facial recognition ftw!).
I guess what I'm saying is: there's a line somewhere between "get off my lawn!" and "yarrrr, I neeeed to upgrade my iPhone 13 to the 14 cuz widgets work slightly cooler, mannnn!)".
Consumers have to be smarter and have the self-control to know when they should consider upgrading. Consumers should also be demanding companies be as green as possible and, if at all possible, be more socially responsible (both in terms of 3rd world labour force and manipulative marketing).

In my serious hocking playing days, one of our team mates got engaged. After a game I thought it would be funny tho have a few guys grab him and put liquid Deep Heat on his balls. He ran to the shower screaming, trying to wash it off, hot water at first, finally reducing to cold. He was in there for 20 minutes at least. He thought he may never be able to have kids. |

When I was a teen, on a road trip, I took a bite out of a fresh hot banana pepper. It was plenty hot for me at the time. I was suffering a bit. We stopped at the side of the road and took a leak...that’s when things really started to happen. |

Ok bottom line.
My LG phone does everything I need it to, and everything that anyone I know would need a phone to do.
It came with more memory, and has expandable memory on top of that. It has a bigger screen and is of comparable picture quality. I certainly can't tell the difference. I also can't see any difference in response time. It uses charging cables that are widely available and cheaper, and work with multiple devices. The battery lasts about twice as long as my wife's iphone 10 and the battery hers is still degrading. This has been a constant problem with just about every iPhone ever since my old iPhone5.
As far as your claim about apps and testing, I have never had an issue with any app that I have put on the phone. So, while you may see this stuff, it's real world impact on me since I switched to android 4 years ago, has been exactly zero.
The cost was approx. 1/3. - Aetherial
- My iPhone does everything I need it to do. But I can't really think of any killer apps that would make me want to necessarily commit to Apple or Android.
- I can't think of a single app on Android
- I've never, ever had the need to take advantage of the expandable memory
- I've had battery issues with every phone I've ever owned. My iPhone 8 Plus (which is now my wife's phone) and my iPhone Xs (which I only took because my company provided me with one) last a full day if fully charged overnight. I don't need it to last any longer because I always charge it overnight.
- iPhone's proprietary charging cables are available everywhere and they're cheap (I can buy one for $7.99).
- I'm happy with the screen size, resolution, and camera on the iPhone.
- My claims about testing are based on my background in dev and QA. Android is like the "wild west" -- Google has very loose rules about what can be uploaded to their Play Store compared to Apple's far more strict protocols. I prefer the stricter nature of Apple's protocols (albeit, it's a much slower process to get new versions uploaded). Not only that, but Android OS has different flavours - Samsung's OS has presented us with challenges that other Android OS flavours have not. But yeah, I'm glad the end-user experience has been largely good for you -- speaking from the Dev/QA/Support side of things, it's been a (frank)ing pain in the ass.
- Per price, Apple is always going to be more expensive because it's proprietary hardware as opposed to the open world of Google which allows for a lot more variation and competition. It's the one downside of the iPhone. But I'm willing to pay the extra $$$ because I much prefer the user experience.
To each his/her/xer own though. I just always find the Apple hatred/derision to be a bit extreme. 🤷 |

I usually check out Twitter once every few days but only for 20-30 mins max. There's a few people I do enjoy following (James Lindsay, Douglas Murray, Bridget Phetasy, Gretchen Lynn, et al.) but I can only take so much of it. I feel like you're drinking from the firehose if you stay too long on there and it usually just gets my nerves going and my blood boiling. Too many bad actors and manufactured outrage, virtue signalling, and bullying for me to take.
I almost never tweet a response and I never check any notifications. This helps.
Facebook? I used to argue quite a bit on some groups there but I've seen the light: you aren't going to change hearts and minds in that forum (or Twitter, for that matter). I rarely post anything and the only reason I think I hang on to that platform is because my family is on it... then again, I've stopped following 95% of them.
I've never used Instagram and I refuse to.
Maybe in 2021 I'll completely cut the cord with Twitter/FB. I can only imagine how it must feel to be truly free! |

That poop is a fascist wasteland.
Out here in the 4th Reich of the AB prairies, FB is the main driver of their ideology. They will never believe accredited journalists, every problem they have is PMJT’s fault, and all they do is show each other their phones for some stupid FB (fascist) meme. Then they go on the radios and talk about how they’re so much smarter than “Liberals” because they don’t read “fake news”
It’s an idiot pandemic out here. I even find myself avoiding flat-earth conversations. So Kudos for deleting FB. And everyone else who isn’t a RWNJ needs to follow suit. |
