There's a premium on young D and JB isn't shy about throwing assets at someone he likes. - VanHockeyGuy
When he has cap space, that does seem to be the case. |

Not very similar players. Schmidt’s contract is the issue, not his ability. - neem55
Schmidt's contract for what he brings is not an issue.
I love how people pump Kelly's tired over with the VGK on the job he has done, and once one of his players is traded to us all they talk about is what a mistake their contract, or something else with them is. Schmidt is being paid what is now considered a #3/4 dmans salary and he is easily a #2 if not slightly better. Same with Edler and Myers. They are making second pairing money and give us second pairing quality on the ice. |

Beagle wasn't needed where we were at as a team, could have done without.
Roussell was a good pick up and started the contract out as a 40 point guy for us before his knee went one way and his body another. Last season he was coming in as a 26 pt guy off a major injury, still not terrible production.
Sutter was an upgrade on Bonino at the time, injuries are what made that a bad contracts.
Bearschi put up a 42 pt pace followed by a 46 pt pace. Injuries should had foretold that we should let him walk, but teams usually still sign guys like Baerschi back, and 3.6m for 40+ pts is good money for point production, he also wasn't terrible defensively.
LE is just a terrible signing, but coming off 30g 33a season with Boston and FA/JB thinking he would play well with the Twins is why he got signed.
A lot of people use FA's desire to compete and get playoff revenue as a defense for JB's bad deals, others say he was an idiot for telling FA he could do it and not being able to(nobody could get the twins competitive again without selling the farm).
Let's be realistic, nobody goes in to a job interview and tells the guy hiring that what he wants to do is not realistic and they should want it done another way. They won't get the job. Benning backed us into a corner this offseason with a few bad deals that made sense at the time, and if EP specifically(after him Hughes) didn't come in to the league as good as they did, we wouldn't have any issues at all today.
JB's first 4 years were riddled with mistakes with free agents and trades(pretty damned good with drafting compared to other teams), and his last 2 have been excellent. - Retinalz

If he ripped his knee as a teen and had to stop playing competitive hockey, he would be Lefty/Gemma.

It was why we got him cheap, you missed my point. Can’t get a young unsigned rfa on the cheap. Also 6.5 is high on the second pair median, which is more like 4.5-5.
I also at least somewhat agree. Don’t know if Myers is top4. This is going to be a long year if he’s as bad as i suspect he is. Last year was very sheltered. A lot of Jets fans were happy to see him go. |

5.95 is a bit different from 6.5. I think the reason we got him so cheap was because VGK needed to get rid of him in order to sign AP asap (Schmidt is good, but he is not AP good)
You take a look at their defense and it was either him or Theo, nobody else has a high enough hit to make a dent. If JB wanted he could probably turn around and make a hefty profit off Schmidt.
Other GM's admitted there would have been a bidding war and VGK would have gotten more if he shopped. This goes to show that trading him was time sensitive otherwise AP would not be a Golden Knight. Kell knew JB wanted a dman and would make for a quick deal, so he called him. If Kelly called the other GM's he would have gotten a lot more, but it would have taken time and the risk of losing AP and not trading Schmidt as a result was probably a reality. |

Benning had this deal in place well before the start of the UFA market. It was carefully timed and executed perfectly.

Kelly McCrimmon reached out to JB after Tavev & Stecher walked, needing to dump Schmidt for the Pietrangelo deal. Even a fool get's lucky once in awhile. - VanHockeyGuy
